Calling all Labourites, why do you Labour

we should pay more taxes
personally i would overhaul VAT and personal tax systems, simply no VAT and a flat 40% on anything over 25K, remove all deductions, find a way to tax wealth in offshore tax havens, wont increase the tax take much but will make it fairer.
Most increase has to come though through corporate taxation. Large corporations who pay little to no tax have to be forced to pay their fair share

A quick calculation and I think your VAT and income tax policy has just cost the treasury £100bn.

You could triple corporation tax just to standstill I suppose ... or cut public spending

Now I do agree simplifying tax is a good idea and it might well remove some of the loopholes that corporations and individuals are able to legally benefit from but honestly these are the least of our problems (in the same way benefit cheats aren’t the problem)

i dont agree with your figures,
but for moment lets assume they are correct, then keep income tax and vat and make the corporations pay their fair share.

also i wasnt talking about corporation tax, but taxes introduced to close loopholes

I vote Labour because anyone who doesn’t is a ****.

All forms of income taxed at the same rate.
Everyone gets £1 million IHT allowance. 100% IHT above that.
If you don’t pay NI apart from extremely low paid and pensioners you get no benefits.

This loophole idea comes up all the time and I’m pretty sure this argument is far too simplistic. All countries have this problem and the reason why it’s hard to do is because there is no tax law called loophole A for instance. What these companies do is use legal means by way of tax laws that for a lot of companies are correct, fair and needed.

Governments also have to balance attracting business who may otherwise choose another country. Now I don’t vote Tory as a lot of them will have self interest in businesses making large profits even if their books say they haven’t. I would be glad to be rid of them but Labour are equally dishonest but in a different way.

of course they correct fair and needed. (this is sarcasm as it appears some reading this thread cant seem to understand implied meaning)

as this is a thread about labour i would be interested to know how they are being dishonest

So you are saying that every company that doesn’t make a large profit or offsets tax in other ways are all dishonest? You see companies don’t get their accountants together and say listen guys just use loophole A. Whatever law/rule they are using to not pay tax will be a necessity to other companies. So just saying close the loopholes is a tad simplistic.
This along with those figures you said you didn’t believe from the other poster shows me why you vote Labour. There is no logic or common sense going on. Labour amusingly tried this stuff in their Manifesto, most didn’t fall for it.

Now personally if someone suggests that scrapping VAT and putting tax at 40% over 25k would bring in loads of extra cash it would make me giggle. Just common sense should tell you it’s a no goer.

We can all create a long list of all the ills in this country, we can all say let’s put in more money for everything. And an opposition party can say it’s costed with an increase in tax for those over 80k. It the easiest thing in the world to come up with stuff like that. Not everyone is daft enough to fall for it though.

i think we will have to agree to disagree
i have not insulted anyone in this thread, you are the one who decided insults (even mild ones) was the way to go

once you start throwing insults political discussion stops

I think it’s best we do, good luck with your wish list I believe your motivations are sound but as they say the devil is in the detail.

I vote green and they would borrow and tax even more than your lot, we will both be very disappointed for the foreseeable.

@hilts is correct in what he says as loopholes. Companies do try and move profit to a country where they have an entity and the tax rate is the lowest. Fair? No but the UK has benefitted from this. As has Ireland (you may remember the row at the time when they needed a bailout). There are international efforts to close these loopholes but it’s a slog.

Anyway so let’s say we can agree that the only people we can easily get to contribute more are those that already pay tax. Or borrow the money.

So who would you want to give more money to? Then we can figure out how much and how to pay for it

I’m absolutely not digging you out here - and nor will I necessarily disagree with who will you want to give more money too. I certainly don’t intend or expect to change your mind. I often hear Sir K say the government needs to do/spend “more” but never what “more” is.
