Calling all Tories. Why do you Tory?

No, I want to know why people vote Tory, up to now there has been few answers as to why.

I want to understand what influences people have and why they vote for the Tories as a result. I.E Are they Hayekians, neo-liberals, Burkeans, is Adam Smith their influence.

I have loads of reasons which I have stated here many times as to why i am on the left of politics. Up to now I have heard on this thread few reasons why people vote as they do.
The Tory party was not always as it is now though mate. It has inhabited the centre and slightly right of centre, most recently under David Cameron who described himself as a compassionate conservative. I can understand why lots of people voted for him in a switch from New Labour.

In my view Cameron turned out to be very much style over substance and increasingly got pulled to the further right of politics.

'The central task I have set myself and this Party is to be as radical in social reform as Margaret Thatcher was in economic reform. That’s how we plan to repair our broken society.'

(Cameron, 2008)

There are many voters (I am one) that like to inhabit the centre ground of british politics, understanding the need for a strong economy prudently managed, whilst still caring a great deal about social justice, poverty, the health service anyone that has been left behind. My views havent really changed over the years and I vote for which ever party most closely match those views. Mostly, I have voted Labour but have voted Lib Dems once, SNP once and Tories maybe twice. That doesn't make me fickle, it just means political parties change emphasis and move right or left depending mainly on who is leading them. Its only really now that the Tory Party of the last five years have acted in a way that would make it very unlikely I ever vote for them again.

Its an honest answer even if it doesn't include deep political insight. :-)

Cameron’s government was far less compassionate, in my opinion, to this current one.

This current Tory government is as centre and populist as it gets.
The problem is you had a hard left labour leadership and a centre Tory one
If the Tory’s go to the right and labour the centre it changes a lot of people’s opinions
It’s not one party fix all type of thing
Things change as do people’s opinions
I feel sorry for the people who vote a certain way because they always have.

Witton Albinos, are they an all white team? :))

I live in Cheadle, I stay in Paderne when I can. BTW Paderne has a Communist councillor. I am currently in Cheadle enjoying the rain and looking forward to watching the true love of my life MCFC tomorrow on the box.
Bloody spell check!!
Good for you coming from Cheadle. I used to go in the pub next to the church in my courting days and later. Bruntwood Park was part of my last venture out of doors in July and it was nice to see things dont change much except for the ruin of the Griffin as a pub up the road.
We were lectured in European Law many years ago by a very nice lady barrister who referred to 'my friends on the right' perhaps because of where we sat. She was secretary of the Hale and District Labour Party who met in the Railway in Hale. We teased her about holding her meetings
In the ladies toilet with enough room to fit all into a single stall.
I hope you get to Paderne soon, my days of foreign travel have ended because of the insurers. Enjoy the match tomorrow, I have a feeling it will be very enjoyable.

One word... austerity.
Yeah, I can see why you would say what you do so you wont get an argument from me. He didn't win the election on that platform and he won it be positioning himself as I have described. He did fail to deliver on that though.

I'm not going to go into Brexit or handling of the Pandemic by the present incumbents as evidence that they really dont give a flying fuck about people as you already know my views on both those subjects.

Well yeah, I’ll agree in regards to the latter that Johnson is certainly more selfish and all about him, compared to Cameron.

But ignoring Covid and the fact Johnson’s ideology isn’t political, it’s all about what’s best for Boris, his policies were, in last year’s budget, far more compassionate than Cameron’s.

Javid and latterly Sunak, are ideologically different to Osbourne who only cared about the deficit, over people, however, just to give him a slight defence, I do feel the deficit is under played by the left in terms of importance.

It is interesting you think the current Tories are centrists and Labour are hard left.
