Let as many investment banks go to the wall as you like. Absolutely.

The Labour Governement's best thing during their near two decades in charge was to semi-nationalise and so save the banks. But they were retail banks. They could not be allowed to fail. It would have meant the end of the banking sector and economy as a whole for a decade plus. The then government handled the crisis better than most other countries and with efforts will be looked upon very well by history.

No Government would be forced into that decision again going forward.

If investment houses wish to gamble their investors money then so be it. Every fund has a risk rating and investors have their own choice accordingly. What could not be allowed to happen was for people with life savings on deposit in savings accounts to lose their money.

I am very much in favour of the new system.

It's a catch 22 situation unfortunately. Whilst, as I say, I do understand the logic of letting them fail, like it or not,not in my case as I think we'd be better with a more diverse economy, the size of the financial sector is very substantial and allowing investment banks to fail will hit everyone's pockets. If cure is better than prevention, so be it.

Praise for Gordon Brown and Alastair Darlings response to the global crash is rare indeed and coming from such a notable financial expert as yourself I hope others also see the merit in what they did. I also believe history in time will judge them in a far better light and I also think history will judge the austerity of the last few years as an horrendous mistake.

I think his supporters are going to be very disappointed come the next election cos there is no chance Dave is getting reelected. If you think targeting the poorest people in the country, cutting housing benefit while allowing private rent to spiral out of control, forcing people into zero hour contracts just to make the employment figures look good, cut millions of public sector jobs and freezing the pay for the rest of them all the while allowing the cost of living to continue to rise even further is the correct way to run this country then quite frankly you're a ****. The way he and his rich mates who have never ever in their lives had to struggle to survive have hounded and targeted the poorest people in this country is quite frankly disgusting and come the next election they will learn you can't stamp on the necks of the most desperate people in the country and expect to win an election. Can't come soon enough for me.

I'm led to believe having a bit of presence and charisma is important if you want to get to the top in politics. Appearances are everything and a sizeable section of the voting public are pretty shallow and superficial in their analysis of 'leaders' - ask Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock.
