Capital Punishment.

Should a drink driver who killed someone face the death sentence if it was reintroduced?

If not, why not? After all, that victims life was just as precious to their loved ones as anyone else and could cause ripples that impact many other people's lives

Both are the state terminating the life of its citizens.

Why would the state have to be involved in assisted dying?

It's entirely possible to have a charitable or non profit organisation carry out the service with no state funding but operating under strict regulation.

Maybe the answer is to give the armed police a litle more freedom when they arrive on a scene like this.
You want a paramilitary police force? Nope. Not this country.

And although I’m not totally sure, wasn’t it normal response officers who were first on the scene?

So capital punishment is fine if it is carried out by a non state funded organisation operating under strict regulation?

The state has to pass the law to make it possible. The provider of service is secondary.

Can't you take this to the thread on assisted dying?

I think the difference is people want to die and have made an informed choice.

Suicide was illegal until 1961.

What's the difference between the state sanctioning non assisted suicide and the death penalty?

See how absurd the argument becomes?

"According to studies, the average cost of an execution appeal per offender in the USA can range from $1.26 million to $3 million depending on the state, with death penalty cases often costing significantly more than non-death penalty cases due to the lengthy appeals process and complex legal procedures involved; this includes costs for investigation, trial, appeals, and incarceration."

Just found that.
In a purely monetary angle, can you imagine how much it would cost the taxpayer? As there would undoubtedly be an appeals process if Capital Punishment (and every time I say Capital Punishment I think of Tommy Docherty"s slip when talking about football hooligans in the 1970s....can't help it lol) was reintroduced?
So you've found its cheaper to hang him than holding him in prison for 52 years then. Sounds about right

Nope, not really.
I was showing how drawn out and expensive it is to have a society that welcomes Capital Punishment, once an appeals process kicks in.
I'm about as far from a Pro Capital Punishment person as you could get to be honest.
Was simply showing that the "costs saved" for anyone wanting it are not as cheap as they think.

My touchstone is always “What kind of society do you want to live in?”

For me, that would include capital sentences, given certain guardrails. As always, I’m sure there will be people who point to innocents who get put behind bars, and possibly executed, and I understand that concern.

However, I think there are clear cases where capital punishment is warranted, especially when there is absolutely no doubt who perpetrated the heinous act.

Of course, because of my screen name, there will be those who think I’m some crazed American with blood lust, but there’s nothing I can do to help them.

I think we all know of criminals we would never welcome back into society, and there are certain crimes that are universally known as beyond the pale.

To each their own, but I’ll put my money where my mouth is and say I would be happy to aid in the removal of certain people who no longer qualify to be members of our society, as I’ve previously stated.

People like Huntley would probably welcome death as an escape
He tried to commit suicide I think
I want them to suffer the soul crushing boredom and routine of prison for decsdes
And of course the constant fear of violent assault and shit in his meals

So, psychological and physical torture is a YES, but capital punishment is a NO for you.

Got it!

That **** should hang today for what he did. These crimes especially crimes against children are absolutely horrific and he shouldn't be allowed another day breathing.

In cases like these where there is zero doubt they should bring it back.
Who do you want to decide on who lives and dies?
