Captain for next season | Bernardo confirmed (pg11)

Is that Gundogan that’s got another year on his contract and is currently in America for the World Club Cup, or a different one?
I mean, we need to lose at least two players or risk leaving first teamers out of the Champions League squad. Gundogan has been credibly linked with a move to Turkey. We have Rodri back and we just signed Reijnders. I don't think it's a stretch to say he's on his way out.

Only if he wants to go though.

Unlikely, he’s evidently well-respected, and one of, if not the, most experienced player. If he was involved, I reckon he would have got the most votes.
That’s not a fact though is it? Also I believe Pep doesn’t interfere in the captain vote so even if he’d decided Gundo was leaving he wouldn’t have excluded him from the vote

I'd take nothing for granted.
There are several players who have to get their futures sorted out before Gundogan.
I can see a few jumping before they are pushed.
Yes, agreed, but it’s a pretty strong signal in my opinion. Could easily see up to 10 leaving, as has been previously suggested. The likes of Walker and Grealish are out of the door, Stones and Gundogan are more out than in, and there are serious questions marks over the futures of the likes of Ederson, Kovacic and possibly even Akanji. McAtee needs regular playing time too. I’d expect some movement with regard to outgoings after the CWC.

Just because Bernie is in the group doesn’t mean he’s definitely staying either, but I reckon he’s the more likely to stay. Pretty sure Gundo will be off, he’d have definitely been in the group if he was staying as we could have easily named 5, I’d guess the Turkey rumours have more than a grain of truth about them.

I probably imagined it, but didn't Gundo ask not to be in the vote last season because he'd just come back?

It is being reported that Pep did intervene, and selected ‘intelligent players’. Gundo epitomises intelligence in his game. Pep would have picked him, undoubtedly.

Gundogan may have excluded himself, plus didn’t we have 5 last year. Does seem odd that he isn’t in there and there have been rumours linking him with a move to Galatasary.

This whole voting for your captain thing works up until the point when the players vote for a guy who will fuck off mid-season when things get a bit tough.

Same source that listed the 4 also said Bernie is staying.

I never doubted he may leave or in fact we may have looked to move him but I did find the turkey links hard to believe

There are lots of players in America for the CWC whose futures are up in the air. Wouldn’t read into his involvement there too much. It’s not definite (like Grealish, or Walker), but highly likely with recent developments, that he leaves. His contract was also renewed by an automatic clause, so not an active decision by the club to prolong his stay. With the direction we’re heading, I think younger, more energetic midfielders will be necessary. He’s been an excellent player for us over the years, but Gundo just doesn’t have the legs for it anymore.

Everybody in America has a contract but they can’t all stay because there are more players in America than we can register next season, and about 4 or 5 more than Pep wants in his squad for next season if you include Kovavcic and a new right back.

Let’s have it right, not even Bernie himself knows if he’s staying or not currently. Who knows what might happen in the summer window. I think it’s fair to say the chances are we will be looking to move on at least one but hopefully two out of Bernie, Gundo and Kova. I think Gundo looks the most likely to be gone, and maybe if we are confident Kova has got for example a Saudi move lined up, once he’s fit, then obviously we will be keen to keep Bernie. But he’s definitely a player that if the right bid from the right team came in, and he wanted to go, then we’d obviously not stand in his way.
