Captain for next season | Bernardo confirmed (pg11)

Think bernardo should be one of the captains but not the captain.
Dias and rodri should both be ahead of him.
Do think they quite like players being captain for just 1 year, which I think is a bit strange. Few of the captains we have had since vinny left have been in their final season.

Nothing about how Pep is handling anything screams "long term planning" to me and I'm concerned we see the late stage Pellegrini malaise kick in where everyone knows hes off so go through the motions.
Yes I too need to know what my employer is planning on doing in two years, to do my job well today!

I don't necessarily disagree about Bernardo not being the best choice. But not for those reasons or it needing to be a long term option. Otherwise Kushanov should be in with a shout.

Agreed.

So Pep’s picking the captains this season.
He wasn’t happy with how it went last season.
I’m guessing Walker fucking off has influenced his decision, add to that what he saw in the dressing room and on the pitch.
Hopefully it’s strong characters that will speak up and not be afraid to speak their minds when needed.

Too right and exactly how it should be.

I’d say he’s on a par with Dias but Rodri is miles ahead of anyone in that pecking order, in my view.

What difference does it make?
Bernardo just has to do the photos and shake the refs hand.

Rodri and Dias have more than proven they lead by example, armband or not.

Who will do the speech in the huddle?
Who will do the rallying in the dressing room to get them up for the match?
Plus the captains gets to speak to the ref a lot. The other 2 are a bit more refined in their approach whereas I would think the refs would say bernardo is annoying.

So is this a club captain thing and then Pep picks a team captain? Or is Bernardo just starting every game again this coming season? If its the second sentence of mine then it`s a terrible choice as much as we all love Bernardo for what he`s done here!

Bit of a surprise choice, given that he’s unlikely to play every week. He is extremely popular amongst the players, and never goes hiding on the pitch, but Rodri or Dias seemed more likely. I’m sure Pep has his reasons though and sees him as captain material. Unless he’s just done it for sentimental reasons, as recognition for his efforts over the years. Maybe too much emphasis is put on the captaincy anyway, and the leadership group as a whole is more important.

On the pitch, leaders always reveal themselves.
Named or not, playing or not, it is clear that Bernardo Silva is in that group.
The young players we have will always look to someone like him.

Whoever needs to at the time. Have you never watched the documentaries?

Rodri and Dias did more than a few rallying speeches during those seasons.

Everyone speaks to the ref. That rule they brought in hasn't been enforced

You need both: enforcers and pausa players. There's a clear bias in English football in favour of pace over control, which goes some way in explaining why Pep has achieved more than other managers: the first domestic treble/quadruple, 4 in a row, everything... Last season, for obvious reasons, we lost the balance. But this new emphasis on speed we are hearing about won't change Pep's philosophy. Bernardo stands for a key aspect of the latter being the ideal pausa player.

Yeah maybe when we haven’t got those players to open up teams playing this slow controlled football is worse now we have the keys to open up teams the control can come into action when up by a few then pick the other team of with our skilled players

The players have chosen before, from a leadership group. Their choice hasn't started every game, so it's gone to the next in line. This will be no different. What Pep has done is stepped in to ensure the right character is in charge. It might be because of Walker, it might be because we have so many new players at the club and he doesn't feel they're able or ready to make the call themselves.

Either way, Bernie is an excellent choice. So many fell apart last season but he played nearly 50 games again. He'll play anywhere on the pitch and give it his all. He might be in the last year of his contract, but so was Gundo and we won the treble.
