Cashless society

Me and the Mrs sometimes go in the arndale
For brekky, there’s a stall in the market area that does a mean egg and bacon barn
And was always cash only.
I asked him why obviously knowing why but asked him anyway out of curiosity and he said he is charged 2.5k a year to use a card system.
No wonder a lot of these smaller shops still say cash only.
He’s since dropped into the card and cash system. What a fucking rip off this is.
Yet another example of ripping of small businesses.

Then that business owner is an idiot. I guarantee he’s losing more than £2.5k a year in revenue by not taking card payments.

I haven’t carried a wallet for years let alone cash and this is now the norm.

Any business that is relying on cash sales from FOCs is going to have to adapt or fail.

Sam Smiths pubs are the same. I haven’t been in one for about 8 years for that reason.

I’m no expert but to be charged £2.5K he’d probably be taking something like quarter of a million, which doesn’t sound too bad for a small buttie shop.

I wonder if he’s ever noticed that banks charge a not insignificant fee every time a small business pays cash in over the counter?

Point being I didn’t know you had to pay to use a card machine.

Businesses need to do both, choice is the key here. I as an OFC understand that many people like the convenience of waving plastic or pinging their phones it's what they want and they should be catered for whenever possible, but cash should also be an option.

Cash payments in retail are less than 10%.

Given the faff, risks and costs involved if I were to open a retail business tomorrow there’s no way I’d be taking cash. The negatives massively outweigh the positives.

Yet weirdly I have never had an issue paying cash in any store, direct debits and paypal take care of everything else, payments with cash are not going to go away.

If you have a retail store the good business would be to cater to both cash and card/phone otherwise you will lose business although that's a hypothetical statement because I have yet to enter a retail store that has refused good old wonga.

Loads of places are card / mobile payment only, especially small retail businesses. My local bar and the gift shop down the road from my house are two examples just off the top of my head.

Processing cash is a faff that costs time and money and is increasingly not worth the hassle given next to nobody uses it anymore.

I know some old people will cling onto it in the same way they still like to use pounds and ounces but cash is dying, that’s just a fact.

I don't know where you live but every store I go to accepts cash, I used to pay my bills with cash but now there is no option. IMHO people pay cash where they can and they do.

My problem is people who think paying by cash is some kind of crime, it's an odd attitude and the busy fuckers need to rein it in :)

I think you must live a very old school life in a bubble mate. Pay bills with cash?!

The real world has moved on. Most people absolutely do not “pay with cash where they can”.
