Cashless society

I can see why people do it as it's easier and should be quicker. Also for businesses it limits employee's dipping the till, although some clever ones will find a way. You do have to be careful though. Only on Sunday in the pub the barmaid ( Is this word allowed now, lol? ) Shoved the card reader at me and normally I just tap my card without really checking the amount. Luckily this time I did as it was showing £8 instead of £3.46! Speaking to one old boy later he said when he checks his bank statement he is charged a different price for the same drink quite a lot. Then there is the worry that the powers that be could just cancel your cards and freeze your account. Once done, without cash, you wouldn't be able to buy even a bottle of milk. You would be fucked.
Getting the amount wrong on the card machine is not much different to being short changed but, with the card, he could appeal to his issuer and raise a dispute. I also don’t understand how a dishonest member of staff profits here?

Either way, unless a bloody good excuse was immediately made then I’d never go there again.

I spotted it straight away luckily. I'm not sure but isn't there a facility on these machines to add on tips? It was a wake up call never to just trust a member of staff, innocent mistake or not.

I think the gratuity is usually an option first and you have to skip past it.

It's better to always check. There's taxi drivers in other countries that use this trick to dupe tourists.

Depends how much you are talking about.

I know the example cited is a small amount but contactless limit is £100. So potentially a much larger amount than if short changed.

Last time I was short changed and given change for a tenner instead of 20 I went straight back and had it within a minute.

If that was your last cash in the world , and a cockup on the card machine, you wouldn't be pleased. It could have taken a few days just to process the claim and clear the refund.

Card is obviously better if you are reclaiming money for delayed trains or takeaway/ delivery cockups but isn't always the best method for everyone in all circumstances.

Yes definitely. She is a barmaid that rarely works but she has always given me a vibe she is not to be trusted. Sunday proved me right. I actually paid that purchase by cash in the end as I wanted the change. When I left the bar I checked my change and she had overcharged me by 50p. Not a great deal but still cheeky as I hadn't said "And your own." I wasn't too bothered so let her have it, I'm happy to tip bar staff usually but it should be a customers choice.

You wouldn’t catch me in that pub if she was on. They go from apathetic to lazy to rude to useless round here.

It’s a physical job but if you can’t treat drinkers with a little respect then you won’t last.
