Overall seems from the outside, we have tried to get away with it this year, and maybe down to a combination of factors: Pep not already signing extension, wanting to always work with a smaller squad, upcoming change of director of football, current players still good enough, squad big enough to cope with injuries etc. With us it seems out to get new players in January in a number of key positions, it does seem to point to this being definite gambles taken and mistake of management that are now being forced to act on to correct these, when these should already have been solutions i.e. where are goals coming from outside of Haaland, what if Rodri is injured, too many injury prone players in defence etc.
Easy though from the outside and with hindsight to say that other players wouldn't have step up already and scored more, or other players combined couldn't have covered better Rodri's absence etc. With City overall doing a great job in recruiting and factoring in that some mistake will be made, only really would say that it is more the combination of potential lack of goals, lack of cover for Rodri and injury potential in defence that we should not have been in a position to finding ourselves dealing with altogether, and where more risk mitigation to reducing one or more of these factors would have given us potentially better ability to cope until the Jan window, along with some improvements in recent recruitment and handling of youth players.
Philips, Grealish were good players at their previous clubs and whether its been asking to play a different role or not having being good enough to then make the step up at City etc. this therefore doesn't equate to being able to put full blame on management getting recruitment decisions wrong.
Nunes believe there is a good player there and was good player at Sporting. Seemed a bit of a leftfield purchase going off his time at Wolves though, other than being a back up player that might improve, and could have potentially spent the money on another player that other teams like Brighton, Bournemouth etc. seem to find.
Palmer guessing was not wanted to be loaned out by City, and was deemed good enough to stay and fight his way into playing (Right attitude expected of someone playing for the club), but he didn't want to and therefore we agreed his sale. Gutted he left and not loaning from the outside seems a big mistake where he could have got more playing time and potential come back a more established player or be sold for more money. Hindsight again easy to say but everyone could see the lad had great potential so does seem like a big mistake in wanting to cash in even though the offer seemed great at the time, or else there is more to this decision overall. If it was also down to an assessment of his attitude and not wanting to stay and fight for a place, wanting more immediate playing time, if this was the case, can this be deemed as just believing in yourself rather than part of having any type of bad attitude. Difficult for our youth players if not loaned out until established if not getting enough minutes at City.
