It packed up today. I heard it turn on this morning but after it didn't feel any warmer I checked the radiators. Stone cold. No idea what's happened. I had a new pump put in maybe 10-12 years ago, I'm not sure how long they last. I can't see a pilot light. Mind you the system is ancient it was in the house when I bought it in 1992.

Its fucked - replace whilst you still can rather than get directed down the heat pump bollox - DON'T go British Gas get a couple of local Gas Safe engineers to quote depending on what you need you are looking @ £2.5k to £5k - got mine done 5 years ago for £3k ( plus a couple of extras ) unfortunately the promised savings never materialised as the installation coincided with the utility companies being give a license to print money. Last quarter was just over a grand but comparing units with the old and new boilers on bills should be 50% ie £150 -£200 in winter not six hundred fucking quid plus

Can you hear the pump running ?

I'm impressed your trying to use it, seems most of Bluemoon would rather sit in 5degC than put it on :)

Fuck that - I would rather stay warm than be scared into submission by the News. We have 3 incomes in this house if we can't afford it then its the ends

Is there power at the boiler ? could be a tripped fuse/circuit breaker.

That's if your 1980's house has circuit breakers.

Typical.

I replaced a boiler last year with a company called Warmly. Got a Worcester/Bosch with 10 years free servicing and gas safety certification for £34 a month for 8 years.

Slightly more expensive, but I don’t have to worry about it. Cheaper than British Gas cover without the new boiler!

Yes British gas is a rip off.

Good deal. I had a Worcester for many years. When it reached the end of life, I replaced it with an Ideal, which is probably the next best. Couldn’t get a Worcester as the only local firm that installed them went bust!
Modern boilers last about 15 years then parts start to fail and you should consider replacement. Gone are the days when my Potterton was still going strong after 30 years or so and I sold my house.
The first generation of heat pumps did not work below 0C which is crazy. The latest ones might be better but I would wait another 5 or 10 years.
The thing to check is the flow temperature for any central heating system. 60 is the minimum and the most efficient/cheapest, but 75 is cosier!
Note: I am not a plumber, just my research.

Get a new boiler it will save you a fortune, don’t go with British Gas they are rip off merchants.
My mate’s wife bought a British Gas fire. Paid for it on the next bill. They wrote saying you owe us £600. He emailed back it was paid. They apologised, then chased him again. There followed 6 months of telephone/email ping pong. Finally they sued. My mate represented himself and sat quietly as the plaintiff waxed lyrical about feckless consumers. His turn: Here is the receipt, here is a bank statement, here are the emails. Plaintiff: Oh. Judge: British Gas you are a complete disgrace. British Gas: Please accept this cheque in compensation and these flowers, missus. We are very sorry.
Result: Free gas fire.

I’ve used boxt.co.uk twice and had no issues.
