Centre back options

Boateng is the best but I can't seen City getting anyone out of Bayern that they want. PSG defenders maybe. Especially if there's a swap on the cards.:
Do we really believe that there is a complex central defender deal on the table? If it falls through, where's the back up option? The two most difficult positions to come in and hit the ground running are goal keeper and central defender. The problem we had last season was that there was absolutely massive pressure on our central defenders.

1) The full backs were shot
2) The keeper was in melt down
3) The strikers couldn't make a game safe
4) Toure was stuck in 2nd gear
5) And most importantly the main man Kompany was out
6) Whole team was getting used to Guardiola's plans

A lot of those problems will be solved. Should be easier for the central defenders next season.

Thiago Silva would be my ideal defender

Thiago Silva is 33. What would be the point? If we're going to spend a lot of money at least make it someone who'll be here in 3 years time.

FWIW I can imagine a big CB deal because if think it'd be a "if we can get X the get him" type deal.

So it's not like we're desperate for a CB, but we will try to get a world class one Pep has his eye on if he's available, wants a move etc. for whatever reason. Opportunistic.

I keep telling you who it is but nobody will believe me .... the clue is the shrouded in secrecy bit......sneaking him in so not to frighten the staff

We are talking about the Boateng who won the world championship, champions league and multiple german championships, not the young guy who couldn't handle his first time outside of his home country.
Our a drinks cart.

For the record, I actually like Boateng and think he would be a great signing for our new system.

Short term solution is OK by me. Sanchez is short term, but adds little (cos you have to take quality out). Silva would be a great insurance policy for 18 months in case Kompany gets injured. By then Stones should be ready. Maybe hijack the Keane deal?

There's a difference between 28 year old being short term and 33 year old.

What about Toby Alderweld of Spurs? I know there has not been too many links between City and this player but he did lead one of the best defences of any Premier League Team and he is having contract disputes with his club at the moment. So are going to get Walker off them, why not try and sign him up as well?

Likewise I feel that we actually need 2 CB's and not just one considering the improvements we need to take in this department.

I checked his stats and he's 33 next season. Still playing regularly. Last time I saw him he was a rolls royce of a player. I am just thinking about players who we know can do a job in the short term, not expensive gambles like Mangala and Otamendi which didn't work. Or Stones tbh. I think he'll be a player, but can't play on his own yet.

Alves is 34. Depends on the player as to how his game is affected. Who would you like to see come in?

I give you his first stint at City was a disaster. What I am trying to say is that he has come a long way since that. He is truly world class and has the credentials to prove it. There aren't many higher decorated CB's around.
But how's that any different to saying messi is the best forward in the world. We aren't signing Messi. What gives you the idea we would sign Boateng. I expect he would laugh at the thought. Players are unlikely to return to a place he had a bad experience

I am not saying we will sign him. His name was mentioned earlier in the thread as one possibility.

Alves is 34, and we would not have signed him if he wasn't on a free. We're giving him a 2 year contract.

Thiago Silva is 33 in September and signed a new contract last summer, so he'd be expensive as fuck and is on insane wages as well. And maybe we'd get 2 seasons out of him if we're lucky?

It's so obviously not worth it.

He left us because his ex-fiance was pregnant with twins and he wanted to be near his kids when they were born. Ended up reconciling with her as well so it went well for him.

There wasn't an issue between him and the club AFAIK.

Not to mention there's a completely new coaching staff now, plus some of his Germany teammates and the coach who he credits as the man who "taught him how to defend". How's that for a reason to return?
