Mourinho signed Modric at Real. Although not the same they are similar and not typical Jose players...
Pretty sure the board bought Modric, then under Mourinho he played so badly that he was rated as one of the worst signings in Real Madrid history, only after Mourinho left has he started playing at any level a all. So if he wants to work that kind of magic with Fabregas, I'm all for it

Zidane and Perez signed Modric, Mourinho then proceeded to completely misuse him by playing him off the striker as he wouldn't sacrifice one of his deep sitting holding midfielders, preferring to move Özil to the bench or the right wing. Modric was later named La Liga's worst signing of 12/13. Ancelotti reverted to a more attacking approach, playing Modric alongside Alonso and Isco, Jesé or Di Maria behind the striker and Modric has been arguably Madrid's best player this season along with Tranny and Di Maria.

According to the Portuguese journo Goncalo Lopes, who has been pretty good with City stuff, this would be a club signing, not one Mourinho prefers (he wanted Koke or Pogba). Which is great if true, shades of Roman forcing big name players on to managers in the past. I also don't see Fabregas as a traditional Mourinho player. Mourinho likes a team of workmen where even his flashy players defend and put in a shift (he's turned Willian into a defensive attacking midfielder!), something Fabregas is not accustomed to and unlikely to buy into now. He even had a go at Hazard for not doing enough, and Hazard is a brilliant talent. 4-6 months before the first signs of tension between Mourinho and Fabregas if this deal goes down.

Perhaps Mourinho is willing to go along with the suggestion of Fabregas because Koke & Pogba are being valued as much as €50m each, therefore by accepting Fabregas for less, he still has money to play with regards to strengthening other areas (CB & CF)

When was the last time Mourinho took a player he didn't want?

It's absolute insanity that these reports are being given any credence. Zero chance that this is going to happen. Less than zero.

Doesn't matter if it isn't up to Mourinho, does it?

C'mon ... you really think Mourinho has no say over who Chelsea sign? After they've just sold Luiz and Mata? Pull the other one. Mourinho and Chelsea aren't signing Fabregas unless Mourinho's had a personality transplant and totally changed his footballing philosophy overnight.

It does raise the question though - why sell mata then buy Cesc less than a year later, they aren't that different

Re: Cesc Fabregas

Could someone compare how Fabregas does defensively with respect to Yaya? I mean is he more disciplined, tackles/matches that sort of stuff?

Eh? Mourinho rotated Modric, Alonso and Khedira in the two midfield positions behind Özil...

From that it appears that he won't be able to replace Yaya if the worse is to come. And I don't mean in terms of goals and assists (although I think he will become our main passer) but rather in helping out his CM partner in pressing etc...
