CFG | Academy | EDS in & out season 2024/25

like any player some look great under one manager then the next one doesnt play them
Not like any player.....the elite players always perform, the ones that don't, are the next level, hyped by fans and media as 'elite' but shown up as not that level.......'good' not 'elite'.
Rogers is more about developing than who his manager is though.

Your right....he was gash at Bournemouth, my mates a season ticket holder, and it took ages to convince him, it was the same player now at Villa. He was OK ish at Boro....and yes he's doing really well at Villa, but is it his consistent level over years or just a purple patch? ....the point is we can't keep all these players into their 20's to find out, decisions have to be made earlier.....and you can't "give them minutes" unless they warrant it...his loans at Bournemouth and Boro showed he was not good enough to be given minutes at that stage.
I think you’re wasting your time trying to get through to those who reckon we’ve made a mistake with every young player sale.

I’d argue Palmer, Roger’s and lavia. Obviously they needed game time to develop and it might not have worked at city if they’d have stayed. I’m not saying they would have necessarily been starters either, but talent wise they are more than good enough to make a difference

If your talking about the current squad, I don’t see why Oriely couldn’t have played in midfield or come off the bench more when we were losing all of those games or Mcatee starting a few more.

I think our academy players are so underrated by our own fans.

Rogers form kinda came out of nowhere, there was s reason he went to the championship and Prem clubs didnt wanna snap him up

And while Lavia was a talent he has played like 13 games in 1.5 years he's the new Reece James he just can't himself fit, he's worse than Stones actually really sad to see

Palmer is still the outlier, but think we've made the right calls on pretty much all the others ones

We do develop the players though, just look around at the top clubs everywhere who have some of our former youth players (no less than 4 at Chelsea). It's not guaranteed that they'll play for us, and Pep has bemoaned the jump from youth football in this country to 1st team action. That's not on City.
Our CFA model is phenomenally successful, balancing the books and (largely) funding the investment in young elite (potentially) players.

PSR....a piece of piss, which is why we're buying now and others are having to sell !!

I couldn't agree more, we have received good money from our academy players sold, and unlike other clubs, we haven't whined about selling them, because we didn't need to to balance the books.

There really aren't many that I personally regret not keeping, because we just are not the a team like Bournemouth or Southampton, that can afford to throw youngsters in. Who on here would prefer not to chase the titles and cups, to blood potential? I believe that is no one, but many want to whine about not keeping them.

Doku was signed a week after Palmer left, which I feel is good business, because Palmer wanted to go. He was injured for a long time in 21/22, which I feel curtailed his development slightly, and in 23 he wanted to leave. We know that Pep will never keep a player who does not want to be here, so we made a good profit on him. I think he is the only one that we have let go, who has progressed massively to be a success, but I think that has come about by being a top purchase by Chelsea, so they have played him every week. He would be against Grealish and Doku in our squad, so would not be the first name on the scoresheet.

Palmer essentially has a free role at Chelsea which he'd never get at City. As yet, he still doesn't have a defensive 10-man, low block, armoured wall to penetrate every game either.

I'm happy things have worked out for Cole, but he had chances to establish himself in City's first team, but didn't capitalise on his opportunities. He's moved on now & so should we so we can concentrate on the players we actually have in our squad.

Absolute joke if City allow that to happen. This kid was one of our best players in pre season but has barely got a sniff this year.....why? Again.....Lavia, M.Rogers, Palmer all ex academy who would drastically improve this team.
You believe that they would drastically improve this team.

I am a follower of our academy football and I relish our academy players being given game time. However, perspective is good. High emotion after a humbling is not always the best time to judge.

Taking Romeo Lavia as an example. We are now in the 2024-2025 season. Lavia left in the 2021-2022 season. He left three years ago. In the last two seasons he has played 569 minutes of PL football. In those appearances he scored 0 goals and 1 assist. He is a talent, but believing that three seasons ago he was ready for our team is simply untrue. He would not have replaced any of our senior professionals, and many here would not have wanted him to. From his perspective, he believed he was good enough to play and wanted gametime. We are now three years on and in all competitions, he has played 570 minutes in the last two seasons.

Morgan Rogers is doing really well. I watched him a lot and he was nowhere near our first-team and looked one of the weaker EDS players. It is fair to say that this season he has dramatically improved but would he have improved our team at the point he left - no.

Cole Palmer wanted a loan. We wanted him to stay. He chose to leave. It happens.

Of course they'll sell him and McAteer because we spend 200m this window and sell those two for sound 25/30m each it will cover that spend Amortisation wise! City are a business and why they haggling over every player we buy to save a few million..

As fans we need to get our heads round the fact that the men that run City, the accountants , the lawyers, the bean counters… they arent City fans!! They are people at the top of their professions there to do a job. Not just for the now, but to enhance their future employment credentials.

Selling an academy player = pure profit
Buying a player = cost spread over term of contract.

They obviously want the club to be successful, because thats really important too, but getting there, they dont care what players thats with as long as its a good business model
