CFG | Academy | EDS in & out season 2024/25

As fans we need to get our heads round the fact that the men that run City, the accountants , the lawyers, the bean counters… they arent City fans!! They are people at the top of their professions there to do a job. Not just for the now, but to enhance their future employment credentials.

Selling an academy player = pure profit
Buying a player = cost spread over term of contract.

They obviously want the club to be successful, because thats really important too, but getting there, they dont care what players thats with as long as its a good business model
I would say most fans feel the same way.

That's to do with the manager and DoF and what they want to do
What I can’t understand ,given we’re supposed to one of best Academy’s in the world, how few become regular first team players ( for us at least!). We’ve not produced a top home grown striker since Neil Young !. We can’t even develop a top left back. The Academy seems to just a factory farm for producing league standard players for profit. That’s ok but I remember the owners stating that all the money spent at the outset of the ‘project’ was just to catch up with the big boys. They added they hoped in future the team would comprise of mostly home grown players. Poor scouting or training then?

Its just for profit, far away from La Masia and Ajax

You believe that they would drastically improve this team.

I am a follower of our academy football and I relish our academy players being given game time. However, perspective is good. High emotion after a humbling is not always the best time to judge.

Taking Romeo Lavia as an example. We are now in the 2024-2025 season. Lavia left in the 2021-2022 season. He left three years ago. In the last two seasons he has played 569 minutes of PL football. In those appearances he scored 0 goals and 1 assist. He is a talent, but believing that three seasons ago he was ready for our team is simply untrue. He would not have replaced any of our senior professionals, and many here would not have wanted him to. From his perspective, he believed he was good enough to play and wanted gametime. We are now three years on and in all competitions, he has played 570 minutes in the last two seasons.

Morgan Rogers is doing really well. I watched him a lot and he was nowhere near our first-team and looked one of the weaker EDS players. It is fair to say that this season he has dramatically improved but would he have improved our team at the point he left - no.

Cole Palmer wanted a loan. We wanted him to stay. He chose to leave. It happens.
I'm becoming more convinced that people who keep bringing up Lavia don't actually understand how time works. He was just 15 when we bought Rodri to eventually replace Fernandinho and then left 3 seasons later. From the best DM in the world to his replacement, the next best DM in the world, and they think Lavia could have displaced either in that time period.

Strange how the same posters keep bringing up Palmer, Lavia & now Rogers but then suddenly run out of names. I highly suspect that most wouldn't have had a clue who Lavia and especially Rogers were before they left.

I am a regular watcher of academy games & have been since the days of Denis Leman, John Gannon & John Clay etc etc & never in a million years would I have predicted that Morgan Rogers would become the player he is now. He was very underwhelming at youth level. At the time he was on competition for the left wing spot with Jayden Braaf. Of the 2 Braaf was the one who looked like he would become a genuine world class superstar. I've checked on Google were Braaf is now. He is playing for Salertinana in series A in Italy on loan from Hellas Verona. He's previously had loan spells with Dortmund & Fortuna Sittard so his career has gone in the opposite direction to Rogers. It just shows you can't always say with 100 per cent accuracy who will likely make the grade from youth team to top level players.

He hasn't been, isn't, and never will be, a prem player, not even close! He will do well if he manages to have a career in the championship, but wouldn't be surprised if he drops down a level from there!

Just out of interest, how many more goals does Delap have to score in the premier league before you consider him a premier league player?

isnt it a bit odd when Palmer, McAtee, Delap was around in the EDS Mcatee was imo regarded with highest potential but then only he sticked around and now the others making much more of a name for themselves.
hard to decide if McAtee would be more ahead in his career if he had left permanently to a lesser PL club where he is more of a regular.

for example if Delap and Palmer would have stayed would they have had more playing time than the bits and pieces McAtee is getting? Is the patience of McAtee rewarded? salary wise significantly below the other two especially if Delap makes a big move this summer. Palmer should be rewarded well at Chelsea as long as he has a decent agent.
McAtee on total sum of 130 minutes of PL football this season and he is 23 years old in October so not exactly in the youth player category anymore like Pusey or OReilly.

Going to Sheffield Utd was his biggest mistake, especially for the 2nd season. I think Palmer would have had more playing time as he was already getting some the season before.

I saw Rodgers once ( v girona I think ) and want impressed by him

Apparently in for Jesse Derry from Palace (son of Shaun Derry). Plays LW.

I'll admit I was impressed with him in the FAYC against City back in December. However, not sure why he'd come as he's not as good as Reigan Heskey.

Villa and a few European clubs interested too.
