Essen is pretty quiet at night though I had a wild time there at the Christmas Market on one of our Schalke trips. The transport is so good it doesn't matter where you go.

You can still drink all day in Dusseldorf because the trains are so quick and cheap and then head for Essen after the game.
Cant imagine many blues will be staying there though due the prices of hotels.

Cologne was good in 2008, could have changed.
They expanded the ticket area to cover the whole North Rhine-Westphalia last season it seams which includes Cologne but didn't before that.
