I watched the 2021 Final back today for the first time. The first goal is so crucial in these games. The emphasis on a world-class keeper and striker being present is massive.
A few things about that game
1.The System was unfamiliar to the team that made it hard for us to find rhythm.
We played 3-4-3 with Zinchenko and Bernardo (at times Mahrez) as wing backs.
2. Pep kept instructing the players to keep a high line, which they were uncomfortable (because of Werner's pace) and unfamiliar with in the new system.
3. Mahrez was awful the whole game, KDB was poor as false 9, Gundogan as DM and Sterling LW played better than I thought on second viewing.
We were the better team (like Liverpool yesterday) overall in terms of controlling the game and possession but there was too much interchanging of posistions and tactics, no player looked comfortable in their role whereas Chelsea looked comfortable from min1. Liverpool can look back at thier final and say they gave it a real go, they created multiple chances in the final but Courtois put in an incredible performance. Our final still leaves me with a bitter taste in the mouth, we didn't perform even half of our capabilities.
I think Stones and Dias is still our best CB partnership, we need a real LB id be happy with Cucurella/Lodi and Zinchenko and Cancelo as back ups. My only concern is Ederson, he's never filled me with confidence in goal and he has really dropped off this season, at least I hope we bring in a top keeper for competition.
I think injuries/fatigue cost us this season in both semi-finals (FA + UCL) also I feel the constant bias in the media towards Liverpool really wore down the team mentally, the constant quadruple rhetoric was so obvious and annoying.
With Haaland in + a LB and DM I think we can win the league in Feb/March and then rotate players for the latter stages in the cup comps, fingers crossed.
