Champions League Coefficients - are they fair?

the fact that arsenal have gone out in the round of 16 for the last 4 years should tell you something. Nowhere near the title domestically yet they are perennial pot 1ers due to their coefficient - and this coefficient is high errr due to the fact they are always in pot 1, catch 22. As soon as they have to play a decent side, they get eliminated.

A slightly fairer system would be to award more points for beating higher seeded teams - currently you get the same amount of points for beating Olympiakos (snigger) as you do Barcelona. Also, domestic performance should be factored in somehow and performance over maybe last 2 seasons only should be taken into account.

If the sole criteria is to rank the teams in strength order then:

Use this a week or so before the draw date to establish the pots.

If the criteria is to reward past performance then you could have a multitude of systems.

Celtic beat Barca in the group stage last season, reached the last 16, yet only improved 1 place in the rankings. They picked up the same coefficient points for beating Barca (62 places above them) as Chelsea did for beating Nordsjaelland (168 places below them).

Can you imagine if the league started each season under a handicap system, where United for example started on + 10 points, because of their achievements in recent previous seasons?

It isn't a perfect analogy but the general principle of giving the teams who least need it an advantage before the competition even starts is a resonable comparison I'd say.

I'd like to see a competition with just the champions of each league involved.

Maybe a preliminary round for the champions of lesser leagues, then a straight draw from round one, with no seedings.

Could call it something like, The European Cup maybe?

Probably a shit idea.
Actually, it makes sense.

In the same vein, how about a cup for the winners of a country's own domestic competition, eg the FA Cup. You could call it the European Cup Winner's Cup.

Then you could have one for higher placed teams from the various leagues - perhaps call it the Europa League. Edit: damn it, they've already thought of that.

Never catch on, though - it's too straightforward.

Not really.

But Wee Davey would still cock it up.
