Champions League Coefficients - are they fair?

All we need is one lucky season when we draw Benfica/Porto in pot 1, finish top of our group get a lucky draw in the quarters, then we might gain enough points to jump into pot one and take advantage of the corrupt system!

I agree with the suggestions that domestic performance should be accounted for in the coefficients. UEFA should also reward teams based on who they beat, i.e us beating Bayern should count for more than beating CSKA...after that UEFA should make me some popcorn

Can you imagine if the league started each season under a handicap system, where United for example started on + 10 points, because of their achievements in recent previous seasons?

They'd still be 5th. :D

The coefficients should be based on how rich the clubs' owners are, and how much actual debt that club is carrying. Or not carrying, as the case may be. Simple really.

I'd like to see a competition with just the champions of each league involved.

Maybe a preliminary round for the champions of lesser leagues, then a straight draw from round one, with no seedings.

Could call it something like, The European Cup maybe?

Probably a shit idea.

Touche.

Money will always override the purity of the old European Cup format.

Ranking

Club Elo

1 Bayern 2124
2 Real Madrid 2085
3 Barcelona 2058
4 Atlético 1931

5 Man City 1929
6 Chelsea 1917
7 Paris SG 1900

8 Juventus 1894
______________________________

9 Liverpool 1880
10 Dortmund 1866
11 Benfica 1855
12 Arsenal 1854
13 Man United 1842

Well no they aren't though 6 of the last 8 are the best teams in terms of their ELO Ranking, which is a much better method than UEFA's seeding system.

Basically City and Juventus should be there rather than Rags and Dortmund.

They've got our place! ;-)

As long as they don't fluke it and qualify for next year.

I did a system for this season's draw, where I kept it over 5 years but decreased the value of the points year on year (so last season=100%, season before=80% etc.), I also changed the points scoring so that Pot 4 teams would score more points for beating a Pot 1 team than vice-versa, there was also more weighting to the Europa as well and ended up with these pots:

Pot 1: Bayern Munich(125.981), Chelsea(118.263), Barcelona(116.891), Real Madrid(93.432), Benfica(83.116), Atletico Madrid(79.075, Man Utd(74.763) & Porto(70.451).

Pot 2: Schalke(63.301), Borussia Dortmund(61.241), Arsenal(58.203), Basel(56.471), PSG(51.64), Shakhtar(49.458), Zenit(48.833) & AC Milan(47.689).

Pot 3: Marseille(44.63), Leverkusen(42.54), Olympiacos(42.24), Man City(41.583), Ajax(40.716), Anderlecht(40.432), Juventus(40.088) & CSKA Moskva (38.053).

Pot 4: Galatasaray(37.866), Napoli(35.978), Viktoria Plzen(34.753), Steaua(32.606), FC Kobenhavn(32.488), Celtic(30.88), Austria Wien(11.635) & Real Sociedad(11.032).

What that does is automatically promote teams that did really well in the Europa over the past few years as well, meaning that it's performance across Europe. It hurts teams like Arsenal and AC who do the same trick of getting to the Last 16 and then going out and it also closes the gap between pots, meaning that if United had done poorly this season they'd have dropped to Pot 2 and Basel are up in Pot 2 because of big wins v the likes of United, also means the likes of Steaua and Plzen are a good run away from Pot 3.

I also agree that the Champions should be Pots 1 & 2, which would have made the Pots look like this:

Pot 1: Bayern Munich(125.981), Barcelona(116.891), Man Utd(74.763), Porto(70.451), Basel(56.471), PSG(51.64), Shakhtar(49.458) & Olympiacos(42.24).

Pot 2: Ajax(40.716), Anderlecht(40.432), Juventus(40.008), CSKA Moskva(38.053), Galatasaray(37.866), Viktoria Plzen(34.753), Steaua(32.606) & FC Kobenhavn(32.488).

Pot 3: Celtic(30.88), Austria Wien(11.635), Chelsea(118.263), Real Madrid(93.432), Benfica(83.116), Atletico Madrid(79.075, Schalke(63.301) & Borussia Dortmund(61.241).

Pot 4: Arsenal(58.203), Zenit(48.833), AC Milan(47.689), Marseille(44.63), Leverkusen(42.54), Man City(41.583), Napoli(35.978) & Real Sociedad(11.032).

I think that makes it far more interesting.

Haha, Wong thread SR.

Such purity was derived from beating Crusaders!
