Atalanta have looked quite poor this season and their defenders are often guilty of ball watching: case in point.
The following might perhaps sound odd to some people, but I know for a fact, in fact I would bet my life on it, that Gasperini is fuming right now...
For United it's an accumulation of things: Manager under extreme pressure, players questioned for their ability, others for their commitment etc. They are completely paralyzed -and the crowd is already turning against them...
A few weeks back, Villareal did the same mistake, switching off with no reason, allowing them to breath. We all know how that turned out -and the Spanish team have only themselves to blame. 3 wasted points at OT...
Instead of having already killed the game, suddenly defending a 0-2 lead at OT becomes a burden for Atalanta players. This has nothing to do with the manager's work, the quality of which is impeccable. We are talking about game management here, we are talking about personality. I'm sure the Italian boss will do everything possible to wake them up, hopefully his players will respond...
Atalanta need to defend while seeking for the 3rd goal. If they don't score, they must keep making United feeling uncomfortable, forcing them to make errors, forcing them to attack without a clear mind, without finding a rhytme. If they remain passive, then Atalanta are taking a big big risk. The only thing that could hold United players psychologically right now, is realising that their opponent lacks self belief...
