Channel deaths | Four confirmed dead after migrant boat tragically capsizes (p 41)

I'm fairly sure the coastline could be policed if the money was available and of course the will.
Wouldn't even be that difficult in principle I don't suppose. I live on a non descript high street in a small no mark market town and there's two street cams in a quarter of a mile stretch. On most coastlines there's a web cam already set up. I want to see times square right now I can. How many web cams/people to monitor them, would it take to watch the coastline? Not much I wouldn't have thought in the grand scheme of things. Where there's a will and all that.

You want the UK government to ban the sale of boats in France?

Or I suppose it would have to be the whole of the EU, because there's no reason you couldn't buy an inflatable in Spain or Germany and drive it to Calais.
Of course I do....GREAT Britain, we dictate laws to the rest of the world!
NOT!
It would be abit pointless banning/restricting the same in the UK as they are already here. Equally, as you say (in answering your own question), would have to be some sort of europe wide thing. ..but then it is a Europe/world issue anyway. Those who genuinely need or have a use for a boat can prove it.

I’m not sure it would be possible to police all of it without it costing an absurd amount.
Agreed obviously the most suitable crossing points could be better policed in the attempt to stop people losing their lives in the channel especially during the winter and processing by the EU authorities prior to reaching channel coast might help, with the next wave of a Covid variant closing in as well .

60% of people who make it across are granted asylum after being assessed.

Imagine how much better off these people would be if they were allowed in without having to pay €4,000 per person to get trafficked across?

Imagine a family of 4 arriving with €16,000 to get their life sorted instead of putting it in the pockets of smugglers.

Also imagine how the smuggling economy would collapse if 60% of people they put in dinghies was taken away.
I suspect for many, that is their life savings. Circa £10k wouldn't stretch anywhere, so how would you propose they live once that money is spent?

Get jobs?

What do you think they do now? Please tell me you don't actually believe the Daily Mail propaganda that they all just live off benefits?

I'm really confused by this comment, surely you didn't think I was suggesting they live off €16k for ever? It's enough to pay some rent and buy food for a few months. Buy a car so they can get a wider range of jobs. Get English lessons or the UK equivalent of a qualification they have back home.

Totally unrealistic bud imo

I believe what I see locally today, which is plenty in free accomodation and in receipt of benefits.

Yeah, because they're arriving fucking destitute, having spent every single penny they have getting here.

Which was the whole point of my original comment - imagine how much better they'd do in this country if they arrived with significant amount of money to get them started.

Sometimes you really don't seem to read the comments your replying to.

Given that they can't even set up a system to monitor the inside lane on "smart" motorways to keep broken down motorists safe they just would outsource it to a firm that couldn't make sure all the camera's work never mind have enough staff to monitor those that work. What you have to understand is they don't want to stop the people coming here - its one of the bogeymen they need to keep their base angry
