Channel deaths | Four confirmed dead after migrant boat tragically capsizes (p 41)

You’ve commented a lot on this thread, without actually suggesting anything beneficial.

What would you do to stop people drowning in the English Channel unnecessarily?
I thought I had proposed some actions!
But in summary then

1.Review of the UN Convention in relation to refugees as the 51 version was very focussed on the aftermath of war and the 67 ammendments did not really deal with the way the world is today

2.World/Europe wide approach to the resettlement of those form war zones or fleeing persecution. Acceptance thatall countries agree to accept a proportion of those displaced or fleeing. (As I suggested previously, perhaps based on a % of total population so that all countries can then see they are not being asked to more than others)

3.Allowing "out of country claims" to allow those in transit camps or attempting to leave their countries to make claims and have them considered prior to any further perilous journeys. (This would also hopefully prevent many "migrants" from falling into the clutches of smugglers/traffickers)

4.From a UK POV, amnesty of all current outstanding asylum claims in the system, to remove the backlog saving millions in caseworker fees and from appeals/legal aid bills. Allowing money to be diverted to the setting up of the "out of country" application process. Immediately allowing all those in the system to work and therefore pay taxes etc

5.Greater use and flexibility in the "Family Reunion" policy and visa process...something that allows people to apply out of country already

6.All claimants arriving by small boat to immediately be returned to the "new out of country application processing centre" in calais/Dunkirk (wherever) This demonstrating that paying traffickers to use this route is no longer worthwhile

7. If possible ban the sale of all boats or require permits to be obtained prior to sale. Seems a bit petty and small scale but wouldnt think it would take that much to do somethign to remove or restrict the means of travel.

8.European/Europol/Interpol funding for more efforts on OCGs dealign with people trafficking/ Changes to laws/sentencing for those involved to act as a deterent

Is that enough?
Sadly all costly and not playing to the Daily Mail / Tory electorate

You do know who Alf Dubs is - what he brought into law and what the Nasty Party have repealed? Thats the background against which it needs to be read.
Yes I know who he is but it still doesnt get away from the lazy way it was written or incorrect terminology or factual errors. The attempts to get the name of the "THE BYLINE TIMES" in as many times as possible.
It would have been better to actually quote him fully also. Great man YES, poorly written...but then thats abit rich coming from me with all my typos and grammatical errors.

You want the UK government to ban the sale of boats in France?

Or I suppose it would have to be the whole of the EU, because there's no reason you couldn't buy an inflatable in Spain or Germany and drive it to Calais.
