Charcoal or Gas

Keep them coming Blues. I want as much evidence as possible. The counter argument though is gas is faster and more convenient and doesn't smoke and smell when you light it!
That's because it's not a barbecue, it's a gas cooker you've dragged outside.

Tell her she can have gas.

She can stand in the fucking kitchen all day long and cook while you're out in the garden cooking with coals and having a beer.

My good lady is trying to persuade me to move from my charcoal bbq to an all singing gas one. I have resisted so far on the basis of 'better flavour with charcoal'. Am I right? What do others think?

Tell her not to bother you with such trivial matters, and to buy a gas bbq and use it herself if she's so keen.

Used to use charcoal in the UK but I use the barbecue most days in qatar to do steak so moved to gas as it's less of a pain in the arse on the balcony. When we have ends round, we use the charcoal fire pit by the pool.

Too bloody hot for that at the moment anyway.

I've used coals, then went to gas and then gone back to coals.
at the end of the day coals do flavour better, are more satisfying to cook on and you can cook low and slow if you want to.

BUT,,,,, you do get decent taste from gas if your bbq has lava rocks or vape bars and you use the hood. Anyone that says you might as well use the oven has clearly never used one. Its pretty decent, but its just not coal.

The only advantage gas has is you can be cooking in 3 mins.
You get home from work midweek and there is an unexpected small break in the clouds/rain, BOOM! You're having bbq for tea.

I find with coals the bbq is much more of a planned, all day affair, Which is great but it means I eat a lot less bbq.

When I had gas we had bbq approx 30 times a year, with coals maybe 10 if I'm lucky.

Now, folk that use coals but the bbq has no hood or cooking chamber????? What the fuck is the point in that?!?!?
