Charcoal or Gas

Was persuaded to buy a gas one on Saturday after nearly getting another coal BBQ. It's not bad actually, tastes good and you don't have to wait to start cooking like you do with traditional ones.

I'm 50/50

Pellet smokers are nice, i used one and it was a fine piece of gear. It still left me cold though as a bbq lover.
It is like a gas bbq with a smoker function. They do look cool but thta is because they are not cheap.
The uk has minimal dealings with them so far also for example food grade cooking pellets are not in every shop and if it breaks chances are no uk engineers have ever touched one before.
Pellet smokers are for serious bbq'ers who go into competitions and such.

Use the minion method on coal for a long low and slow, 30-35 briquettes on grate and put 12 or so hot coals on top of them.
You can get a good 6-7 hours before adding more fuel that way.
Thats interesting. Why do they call it the minion method? what temperature do you get with that? Must try it!

I just made this today out of some old cans, in about 40 mins. I made my dinner on it using a few bits of old wood for fuel. Probably used about 20 times less in fuel then what I would have used for a BBQ.

As this thread will doubtless go on to demonstrate, only the very worst wankers and rags use gas. Charcoal all day long, or you might as well save the bother and just cook inside.

First reply and the thread can be ended already. Bravo.

Gas, although clearly all you real men are making me wonder if I'm right. After all, cooking something over a flame caused by burning hydrocarbons really varies a lot if the hydrocarbon chains are longer. And if anyone really believes it's like using a cooker, then please show me the cooker that barbeques meat over a naked flame.

Get home, sun's out? I'm eating BBQ'd steak in 10 minutes!

I had a stovetop hot wood smoker, its mainly for indoor use, took a bit of getting used to re temp, but the choice of different woods available made it interesting, nice for hot smoked fish!!!!!
