Over the last 30 years I've worked for 5 charitable / not for profit organisations both in the UK and the US.
What donors may not realise is behind every fantastic volunteer on the charity shop floor or low paid carer in a home, are recriutment staff, training staff, admin, finance, building maintenance staff, HR, regional and senior management along with a company car or mileage expenses etc .
A HR person for a charity has to be paid the same rate as a HR person for a similar size business otherwise they will be looking.for employment in that other field.
Whilst the work on the ground is the face and the public image of the charity, behind the image is a business run like any other.
