I posted some in the AI thread. some very very good, some are still really uncanny valley around the mouth when speaking. the one at 24 seconds saying "we are cooked on that" has really visible morphing when speaking, quite a few I've seen are like that with ranges of effect.

I saw some of the google AI presentations last week about digital fingerpriting in AI videos so they can be proven to be AI.

I think 99.99% of the population have absolutely no idea that mankind could very conceivably be wiped out in 5 to 10 years time. And that the chances of it are not 0.01%, but maybe more like 10%. It's too scary to even think about.

We're about to create beings immeasurably more intelligent than ourselves and yet we have: No idea how it works; no idea if we will be able to control them and, no idea if they will be remotely aligned with our objectives or have our interests at heart. It's like welcoming Klingons to Earth and hoping they are friendly.

AI could be the most brilliant and wonderful thing we've ever created, genuinely solving all illnesses in perhaps 10 years or less. And so much more....Or it could all end very, very badly indeed.

And the problem is, the pressures to not slow down and take a breath are just too great. Companies vying for their very existence and governments (the US and China principally) desperate for superiority over their opponents, both economically and militarily. Nothing is going to stop this. We just have to stand back, watch and hope for the best.

Edit: Incidentally, I think it highly likely that China will invade Taiwan within 2 years. All of the Nvidia chips powering the AI systems, come out of TSMC in Taiwan, and China cannot afford to fall behind the US in the AI race. With the US embargoing nVidia chip shipments to China that puts them at a serious disadvantage and if they leave it more than a couple of years, it could be too late. The west relying entirely on Taiwan is a cock up of gargantuan proportion.

I hate it when reality catches up with dystopian fiction!

It very likely will. The way this is going to come about is that everything will seem to be going swimmingly, and seeing more and more impressive results from AI, we're going to hand over more and control. Driven by the need to have the latest and greatest capabilities and not being significantly behind China in terms of military capability. We'll see how much benefit they are bringing and our confidence in using them will only increase. We'll have no idea if the AIs are plotting our destruction because they will hide it from us, and, being vastly more intelligent than us at that point, that will be a piece of cake for them. Everything will seem completely normal until BOOM.

Edit: by very likely, I mean very likely they will control our nuclear arms. I actually don't think it's very likely they will use them to kill everyone. I think it's pretty unlikely but not impossible. And anyway if they did want to kill everyone, I doubt they'd use nukes.

Yes I'm aware of that. The chips are nVidia's and they are made almost exclusively (maybe exclusively) by TSMC - "Taiwan Semi". The problem is the plants that make these chips (which are called fabs, btw) are enormous and cost hundred of millions. In Taiwan it takes nearly 2 years to build 1 new fab. In the US, 3 years. And they need many of them. Reasonable estimates are that it would take 5 years for Nvidia to move all their manufacturing out of Taiwan.

The taiwan issue, from China's perspective, has nothing to do with the chips. China's semiconductor manufacturing equipment developments are advancing, steadily. Not much anxiety over the chips.
