Cheap car for my mum

Škoda Fabia. Maybe consider an automatic if she is elderly. Made a huge difference for my mum.
I'll second that.
My old man had a fabia, bought new. He had it for years, until his condition meant he couldn't drive anymore.
Apart from normal wear and tear/ consumables, the only thing that failed in 8 years was the reversing light switch, which was a tenner to replace.
Great little car

Honda Jazz.

Fiat Panda.

Both great for older people as they’ve got excellent visibility, are mega easy to drive and very reliable.

I haven’t driven a Jazz but my mum’s had a few Pandas over the years and they’re cracking little cars. Like your mum, all she does is use it to nip to the shops etc.

Depends how big she needs it to be. You are right with your first stab with the Aygo. The Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 are basically the same cars with different badges. Cheap to buy second hand and cheap as chips to run. We have 3 in the family and they are all great. The most expensive of the 3 was £2k.

Yeah I forgot about the automatic option; she’s got 2 knackered knees so could be a big benefit.
Automatic all the way, for the elderly.

My mums had in her lifetime 3 hip replacements (no…), and having an automatic meant she could get back to driving quicker.

Similarly, with the ice & cold, and tendency to slip and fall, it means recovery from a left leg break, is easier and you can still drive.

She has a Yaris. But as others have said, anything reasonably new will be fine.
I’d also go for proper aircon to make it comfortable to drive-in if we have a summer like this year again.

Honda Jazz. My mams got one and they are brilliant cars. It’s 2006 and hasn’t cost a penny other than the usual wear and tear stuff every couple of years

Just reading through this thread out of interest more than with a view to making a suggestion mate, but I notice the Honda Jazz coming up regularly, well, seems like a very good choice from my limited experience with them, it being that an ex got one off her driving instructor brother, (who had it from new) as he decided it was a little too old.

Now it had obviously seen better days, but was reliable as hell, and over 200,000 miles on it too, so, I’m thinking, if it’s had the arse ripped out of it by learner drivers, and all the above and was still doing ok, it’s a bloody good option for her.
