What about ipad 2 and 4 though, is it worth spending more or do they do exactly the same thing? What is retina display? Why is it making it that much more expensive and is a 4th generation that much better than an iPad 2?
Retina display just means that the pixel resolution of the screen is so small (huge number of pixels per inch) that you cannot see individual pixels with the naked eye,
The resolution is so good it can beat your retinas.

My sister's just got a 2nd generation 16GB one from Amazon for £290 and says she can't tell the difference from the 4th generation one she uses at work. Just had a look and they're now £311 (white) or £313 (black). I'd guess if your missus isn't a hot shot techno geek she won't know the difference between 2G and 4G.
