Sainsburys in Stockport has a currency change service and the current rate is 1.24 .
Not sure if you have to be a Sainsburys bank account holder though .

I am off to Crete on Tuesday so I will be changing about £1000 on Monday .

cheers mate, just had a look and they are offering a good rate at just under 1.24. if you pay an extra £4 they will buy back any money that you have left over at the same rate that you bought it..

Try the ATMs when you get over there.Check first for any charges but the rate is usually better than the rate the bank will give you over there.

Nonsense
Unless you have a Halifax clarity card you'll get charged 1.5% for the transaction and a further 1.5% loading by the bank for a foreign currency transaction.
