Firstly, there's his ball retention. But in addition to that, sometimes you just need a floating pivot in the last 2/3rds who is acutely aware of where he is in relation to everything else that's going on. Put those two together with high workmate, and you have someone who knows when to press but also how to join things up when you get that ball.
David had an exquisite eye for the through ball, but I believe Bernie is just as valuable in that 'gelling' role.
Gullitt did the same for the Dutch national team (in a more forward role perhaps, but he came to where a man was needed and linked things up/created space for everyone else).
