The fact that we rejected their approach just goes to show that the idea we are willing to let anyone leave as long as we get an acceptable offer is wildly exaggerated.
I get that the player needs to show a desire to leave which apparently Laporte hasn't but even if he had, I don't believe for one second we would entertain selling him to Chelsea.
The simple truth is that we put up less resistance with the likes of Torres, Ake and to a lesser extent Jesus and Sterling because they're fringe players and they can be replaced but we show a lot more resolve when it comes to keeping hold of our best players like Laporte and Bernardo because they are harder to replace.
