Chelsea (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

We need to regroup fast and go again ? Yes there are many problems with the squad and injuries, but again we can feel so much better with a win vs Brighton and then let's see. Also I've stopped looking at other clubs' fixtures because what is the point? We don't have any control over them and let's get our own house in order by putting results on the board.

The title race will take care of itself and twists and turns happen all the time, a couple of games ago it was all ok City was top because we played before Arsenal ? it can happen and 1 game can change the outlook

Thought we were unlucky yesterday… we seemed to chose the wrong passing option in the box, Fidel & Cherki guilty the most. The injuries to our CB’s didn’t help and it looked like Rodri & Nico were dead on their feet at the end.

Chelsea got lucky aided by some woeful ref decisions, god knows why he didn’t card all their team.

I think we might need to push the boat out and buy on of the English lads from Palace or Forrest to help us out. The Arsenal bench against Bournemouth was far superior than ours yesterday.

I do think that we are moving in the right direction & my son pointed out that the day of the CL final is a blue moon so fingers crossed
I haven't bothered to read much of the post-match because I know it will be the usual meltdown drivel, but this is one of the most level and considered opinions I've seen.

We were 8 points behind Liverpool a couple of months ago and in the eyes of some we were "light years away" from catching them. We've had similar nonsense about Arsenal for weeks now, yet if we beat them in the head-to-head we're just ONE win away from them.

It's an absolute joke to suggest we're not going to match them and not win the title. 3 years ago Arsenal had 5 points more than they have at the same point this season. Who came out on top in that season? You can see from the way they celebrate a win it's like a release of all that nervous tension, like they are desperate for every point. How do you think that will pan out at the thick end of the season? The players are already talking about it in their post match interviews as Rice did, Gabriel in the previous match, so it must be in their heads.

They've got away with a few recently, but like I said about Liverpool at the start of the season, they can't carry on doing that. They could easily have drawn the Wolves game for example but for a very late own goal. With us it's just gone slightly the other way, but we're not going to get another club that battles like Sunderland did and you can see why they're unbeaten at home so far. Yesterday just a bit unlucky, fine margins and all that but we're doing fine and we're close enough to worry Arsenal going into the second half, and that will do for me.

Khus is an example of the haphazard, apparent toss-a-coin decision making that's been evident for a while.

When he started playing, everything picked up. Results, performance, morale, belief. Other defenders suddenly seemed to remember their job, and he was lauded on here.

He was in EVERYBODY's predicted lineup and reached near cult status in no time. Raw, of course, but his Chelsea debut said everything about his character.

A 21(?)-year-old, not speaking a word of English whose first involvement was gifting them a goal and whose second was to get booked - all in the first 5 minutes or so.

Yet by the time he was subbed he'd regrouped and walked off with head held high. That took real character.

Then for some reason - was it the '10-game threshold' before the price went up as many thought? - out of the picture. Certainly not because of performances - in the Real Madrid tie he had Vinicius virtually in his pocket to the extent that in the end you could tell that the winger didn't even want to take him on.

Since then he's been a bit player. Sitting on the bench watching a defence often running around like headless chickens whenever it's attacked with pace - exactly his strength.

God knows what's going through his mind these days.

Surely Kushanov is going to get his chance now, I hope so...

Eureka ! Let's not forget the match Arsenal took Rodri out. The complete match they targeted players. It was about this time that pigmol decided they wanted the game to be more physical because they thought it had lost it's edge !!! Me thinks heads had been put together to put the brake on City.
Plus a MotD pundit saying opponents should "leave one on" City players.

So many players looked totally gassed yesterday and I would give them till Newcastle away in cup to rest.
NOR
FODEN
HAALAND
RODRI

Last thing we want against Brighton is knackered players who can't run.

Not for the first time players have either tried a pass to Haaland that either, had little chance of reaching him (defenders anticipate the pass) or ignored another teammate in a better position (Foden not spotting Cherki's run). This overriding imperative to pass to EH is sometimes not always the best option, but I wonder if players are perhaps just following a Pep directive?

To be fair, a lot of fans are of the belief that Guardiola has say over what happens in the final third.

This is not true.

What I do think, though, is the pressure to feed Haaland because he's not scored in a couple of games.

As I've said, in a following post, Cherki would have picked a better pass in the same position.

Everybody went with Haaland. Phil, the Chelsea defenders and the cameraman..
it's an easy pass to Cherki on the telly or up on level 2/3 but in the heat of the game, not so simple.

I disagree, mate.

It goes to show to me that Foden has poor decision making in some situations. In fact, I'm not really sure how many times I've seen Foden assess the field in the final third and make an intelligent pass forward, this season. I can't recall any obvious ones.

He's not KdB or Cherki in that way.

Apparently there's a 5cm tolerance?? Only other time this has been used this season is City at Newcastle this season. I smell a Rat!!
50mm or 2"inches, might or might not be in the rules, but I have never ever heard it mentioned before in hundreds of games over the last few years. I've heard commentators say he was on/off side by a toe nail (which far less than 50mm) but never ever heard, "well the player was just inside/outside the 50mm tolerance". I think this is absolute bollocks, your either offside or onside. That's what all this technology was brought in for, but only now just hearing there's a 50mm tolerance VAR can fuck you over with. Has anybody heard this used before ?

I thought when Foden scored that header from cherki fancy cross the other week that Pep wont like that.
The players were playing with freedom and being intuitive and looked to enjoy themselves.
Since that game we have looked slow, predictable, uninspiring, no freedom or flicks etc. All abit robotic. Plays look scared now.

Agree 100 per cent. There is nothing between us and Arsenal. They have scraped a few late wins and we have wasted a few points. But the margins are very tight. I thought we looked tired last night but they are in the same boat as us with a tough LC semi and CL games coming up. We are both going deep in four competions which makes it a bit of a lottery. We are at least 50/50 for the title and should bag a cup or two. Villa are in with a shout as well.

Also where was that margin of error when Bernardo was declared offside vs Sunderland? That was tighter than Wirtz's

People think this is a crisis, but we are second. Imagine being forced to play a play off against Gillingham and scraping through in added time to get back into Division One, now know as the Championship. Dickov is a legend

So going off your list that leaves us with 14 players. Majority of the ones you've said nope to I'd ship out, apart from the youth and RAN and Marmoush. The rest just simply aren't up to it.

Stones, Ake, Lewis, Bobb, Phillips, Savinho and Kovacic for starters. That'd free up some room in the squad and on the wage bill
Like i said that takes time, stones ake bobb and Phillips would be a good start.

i rewatched the game.

we were much much much better than i remembered. deserved to win easily. very very unfortunate to drop points, chelsea very lucky, so many times where we were a 20% better pass away from a goal.
We didn't play that bad but the creativity up front was lacking from a couple of players. That late equaliser was a real kick in the goolies though. We were nearly there but with 1 goal in it there's always peril. Grrr....

Maybe but he hasnt contributed with many good performances this season. Hes probably a keeper due to his versatility but thats the only reason. We were crying out for a class all round midfielder and wide player today.
It's another Kevin that is needed. A player who is strong, can carry the ball, ride tackles, score goals and make the right decisions on the break. It will be very hard to find one.
