Deep down, we never had any chance of winning the league this season, due to where we are in the rebuild process. I always felt at the time we started the rebuild that it was a 2-year job, minimum. We went into this season still with many players that need to leave and be adequately upgraded on before we can call the rebuild complete.
So with that in mind, I find Pep’s decision to spam the same players every single game baffling. It’s like he thought we could win the league if every single player stayed 100% fit, 100% of the time… but in what world was that ever a likely thing to happen? We should have been using the full extent of our squad, even whilst knowing that some of them are not at the level required, keeping the squad healthy and in a great spot to go full tilt next season after completing the rebuild.
But instead, by chasing an impossible dream, we have run numerous players into the ground to a point where it risks future seasons too. These things have knock on effects. I feel like we tried to run before we could walk. This was always a transition season in my eyes and should have been treated as one. In believing it wasn’t, we could end up further away from the top than if we’d rotated heavily from the start.
