Chelsea (H) | Post-Match Thread

And over the same period we have only not one 4 games.. three of those with wholesale changes.. that is my point. I honestly believe without the changes that turns to 2. Basically winning all your games bar 2 is a lot better than 8.

Hey we've been on an incredible run the best in the country which is why we are where we are, but Tuchel has turned them around in a few months and they are now a top outfit.

Considering that we could win 3 trophies I can't remember a time when I've been so annoyed with the team selection prior to the match on so many occasions.

Yes, I understand why we do it, but the squad is starting to resemble a British Lions Tour with a Test Team and a midweek side that slowly lose interest and motivation

Hardly smoke and mirrors when our CL Final lineup virtually picks itself

I know its a "thing" to many on here, and I respect that, that Pep didnt want to give chelsea any insight into how we might approach the cl final, for me though, the insights we should have given them were...........

1...we can beat them.
2...weve won the pl easily.
3...they (chelsea) are now in a dogfight for top four prior to the cl final.
4...we can rest and prepare better for said final.

Instead there are seeds of doubt about beating them and added pressure to get the job done in the pl, plus the negativity from all the media "experts" etc in the run up. I dont consider this view to be "flapping" as I am sure we will still win the league, its just that imo winning yesterday in good style had more benefits than giving no insight to the chavs.

pretty much this. Ederson needs to work on his hand and arm strength. Its the fourth goal like that I can remember this season. Small margins and we would have won yesterday. He gave them an opportunity to stake a claim for the first team and they all pretty much flunked it, particularly Mendy, Torres, Sergio and Cancelo. Raheem played ok and still carries a threat. He did well to take the ball off Agueros foot and I think he is slowly working back to some level of form.

For Ederson he's a spectator for a lot of the games but some of the goals we do concede I often think he should have done better with. Getting down low quicker is a definite weak spot and needs ironing out

The problem with wholesale changes is your weaker players stand out a mile. One or two changes and they'd probably look okay due to the extra quality around them.

I'm made up Sterling scored that goal as I fear if he hadn't nicked it off Sergio's toes a defender would have done the same. Sadly in the end it didn't matter as we lost.

You could be right but we nearly had both but for a penalty miss. Only Sergio knew that was coming and, in his mind, he saw himself scoring.

I would back our B team with a 2-0 lead at half time over our A team starting the game 0-0 with 90 minutes to go.

I don’t think that if we played had played a strong side we would have given them an insight in to how we play, they can watch us on video every week to see that.

Genuine question as he was far from worst tonight, but how many times have we lost in the league when Ake has started. Tonight and Leicester for a start?
Sterling, Wendy, Jesus, and Torres are the formula for the last 3 defeats if I’m not mistaken. Semi, Leeds and yesterday. Of course I’m not saying they’re the reason just the common link.

Agreed. We picked a very weakened side. Plus Ake hasn't played in awhile.

The simple maths after yesterday’s last minute deafeat

before the game ,Utd needed to win all at their last five games to have a hope of winning the title

after the game ,Utd still have to win all
Of their games to win the title

Because of our goal difference they still need 14 points but with 5 games left this is impossible they can only get 13 or 15 points

No panic
Hopefully done this afternoon

I know. It’s not like Tuchal will be thinking “oh this is a curveball. I wonder if Pep is going to play three at the back and one in midfield in the final”
There’s a difference between their manager knowing how we’ll set up, and him and his players experiencing it first hand for 90 minutes.

I'm not sure that this has ever been proven to be true. Many top sportspeople have the mentality to learn from defeats and not dwell on them. If there was a measurable advantage we would see some correlation with the team winning the first leg of a 2-leg knockout stage often going on to win the 2nd leg. There's just no evidence of this.

An example of this is the 2017 CL where PSG didn't appear to show any psychological edge over Barcelona despite going into the return fixture with a 4 goal advantage. If there was any psychological advantage to PSG it was so small as to be immeasurable.
For me it was demonstrated as to why City, with the better team over that whole period including Kompany, David Silva, Yaya, prime Aguero, De Bruyne were never able to win at Anfield. There was a mental fragility about City playing Liverpool at Anfield and you can argue about luck, refs, VAR, crowd influence or whatever. Liverpool held a significant psychological edge over us at their place until we finally managed to break the hoodoo earlier this year.

Yeah imagine experiencing it and being on the end of a 3-0 drubbing. Can’t imagine that would have done their confidence too much good. Anyway it’s done now. Let’s hope this smokescreen works.

I would have played a team to get Sterling firing. Playing such a XI almost certainly leads to defeat, and that is never a good thing. I know it was very close in the end but I'd still have used the game to rehabilitate Sterling. That would have been the most valuable outcome from the game.

I though do not know how far into the red some City players were. CFC lost Christensen. What if we had lost Foden or Walker?

I am surprised there hasn't been speculation about KDB.
On the Kev point let's just hope it is a tightness. Honestly, even a typical season you'd expect some players to be playing through niggles and tightness at this point, and if we can get key players playing without those for the final it'll be grand. Agree that we could do with a confident Sterling and Jesus for the final, even if only to come off the bench. For me the next three league games are important for getting those two firing.
