This postmatch thread seems a bit strange now. The game was more like a testimonial with both teams seemingly just completing a meaningless fixture.
When I heard how many changes had been made, it was easy to call the formation & was interesting to see how our second string performed.
We tore the Chavs apart for the first 15 minutes & Alvarez took his goal brilliantly. I thought Palmer was unbelievable during that first half & it was great seeing Foden playing such expansive football as a No 10.
I thought Philips played very well. He's no Rodri, but then who is in world football right now? He made a couple of errant passes, one of which led to a Chelsea attempt on goal, but to be fair, the ball Laporte played to him was a bit weak in truth & a Chav player nipped in ahead of Philips to intercept the ball, where he could have gone to meet the ball instead of waiting for it to reach him.
I thought Philips' header was in & I was gutted it hit the post & rolled along the line. Just imagine what a goal would have done for his confidence? \0/
Gomez was OK in the main, but again a lack of game time & confidence seemed to be his main issues which can easily be resolved with a good rest & reflection of his first PL season, a solid pre-season, with a fresh start.
We played well considering all the changes we made, but having said that the Chavs were woeful & all over the place. As Redknapp said post match, Chelsea just want the season to be over with, & to start afresh next season under a new manager.
We did what we needed to do & gave the supporting cast the opportunity to shine on the day we lifted the PL trophy which was a nice touch from Pep. Lewis took his opportunity well & I was so proud seeing him, Palmer & Foden bouncing around at the end in celebration of lifting the Premier League Trophy.
A 3-0 scoreline wouldn't have flattered us, but 1-0 it was & we got the all important 3 points as I want us to surpass 90 points for the season again, which seems to be the new top two benchmark such are the standards City & the Scousers have set in recent seasons.
We've got Brighton next which will give us a chance to have a closer look at Mac Allister, Enciso & Caicedo, so roll on Wednesday!
CHAMPIONS 23! :-)
