Chelsea Thread 2013/14 (continued)

Having watched Matic today, and on other occasions, he appears one dimensional. I have no idea why commentators rave about him. I would rather have Javi Garcia, a player who receives very little praise.
He was at Chelsea before, but he made less than 5 starts. As a full member of the squad he has been there less than half a season. Of course he is used to the surroundings, players, staff etc. I don't understand this rush to judge players so quickly. As for being one dimensional, I don't see how that matters, that is his job. It's like complaining that the centre back is one dimensional. With him in the team Mourinho does not have to use insane pressing to keep clean sheets.

He cannot pass the ball forward without giving it away. I'd expect more from a midfielder, wouldn't you? Did you not see that it 'mattered' today? He's one of the reasons why Chelsea score so few against teams who park the bus. Yet SKY regard him as some kind of genius.

He's been absolutely fantastic for them and turned their season around. I didn't watch the game today, so can't comment on that, but he has 4 assists in his 11 games this year for them, which for a holding midfielder is phenominal. He is not remotely one dimensional, whether Mourinho is using him in a one dimensional way is another thing, but he has it all. There is not a better holding midfielder in world football at the moment than Matic

now that their are back in it i really hope maureen will make sure he will not lose at klanfied..we need them to take something out of that game

He set up the goal today. He is doing fine and their inability to break down teams has little to do with him. Hard to say Chelsea struggled to 'break down' Swansea today either. Salah and Etoo had a couple of great chances each. They started the game with their two most creative players missing too. Matic is good at his job and will only get better given time.

No. Matic has been a top signing for them. Had he signed for city and put in same performances we'd be raving about him.

The 76 clubs are anyone that played in europe this season that made a loss in 11/12. Investigated is probably the wrong word for it, they are the first that will have their accounts looked at. Chelsea IIRC are not one of them as they made a small profit, neither are Liverpool as they arent in Europe this year.

IMO both have more to fear than us as they are not showing an improving trend in their accounts, therefore can't use the pre July 2010 contracts exemption.

Chelsea will line up against Liverpool in the same way as they did at the Etihad.

Don't remember....a bunch of DMs, right? Hard to play against and can be physically demanding on opposition. Unlike many other managers, Chelsea will do it unapologetically which helps them in one off games.

Are you saying that a central midfielder should not be responsible for creating goalscoring chances?

Chelsea struggled to breakdown a team that were down to 10 men after 10 minutes of the game. Matic then proceeded to fire one square pass after the other, and slowing down the pace of Chelsea’s attacks. I’d expect more from a player that cost £20m.

One dimensional midfielders who are only able to play in a defensive manner are, thankfully, fading out of the game. The better teams cannot carry players with such limited ability in an important part of the pitch. They may have a place at some clubs but only those clubs that play boring, pragmatic football.
