Manchester City is closing in on a deal for 17-year-old central midfielder Chidi Nwakali, Goal.com has revealed.

The central midfielder, who played a key role in Golden Eaglets World Cup triumph in November, is due in England to hold talks over a move to the Etihad Stadium.

Nwakali will fly to Manchester from Lagos with his parents to hold talks with City chiefs on January 2.

If a deal is completed, Nwakali will earn £300,000 a year in wages, fees and add-ons from the day he turns 18 on December 26.

Nwakali is also adept at playing in defence and currently represents Shuttle Sports Academy in Lagos.

The move follows a failed attempt to sign 17-year-old striker Kelechi Iheanacho, who has verbally agreed a deal with Porto amid heavy interest from City

Is this the sort of deal Iheanacho turned down?

Nwakali now in England. If nothing changes he will sign tomorrow, likely the same deal as Iheanacho refused.

if i was a young african midfielder i'd do anything to train with yaya day in day out. Cant be bad learning from fernandinho either.

If i was 17 again i would do anything to sign a contact where i would earn £300k a year on my 18th birthday, all i got was £100 and a cake.

I think the 300K is the transfer fee including how much he's getting paid, not 300K a year.

The only thing that should concern this kid is doing right by his future in terms of his footballing ambitions.
I would hope,at this stage of his career, the money is predominantly a very nice bonus for him and an indicator of his talent for us,and not the overriding factor in his decision to accept our proposal.

Please don't tell me he is the next Vieira.

We had enough of them already.
