I have seen the headlines but can't bring myself to actually read them, it's a sad world we live in sometimes I hope the pair of them are at peace now.

To be fair though I don't think the social worker is at fault here. It seems she kept trying to get someone to act.

Services are stretched and this is the deeply tragic consequence.

More money is of course one thing but I do wonder if we should consider granting more legal power under the care act to have power of entry for example.

It doesn’t. The mum will be a complete dumb-arse. It can’t be overstated just how underdeveloped a large part of our society is. The social workers are more intelligent and are in their position to specifically stop this from happening.

So many social workers are now agency staff. I have worked in this field for a very long time and I have to say it is failing children and families left right and centre. Instead of funding being prioritise it's being cut each year. I actually know social workers that have left their local authority and then come back with nearly double the pay on agency.

I think the police are at fault here, the social workers reported the failure to make contact with the father but they didnt act straight away , what are the police doing with their time these days

There's many good reasons why they shouldn't have those powers.

87.1% of Children and family social workers are women. Most home visits will be alone unless there's a reason not to do that.

And fundamentally, social workers are the main point of contact between the parent/child/other family members and the local authority.

Social workers do not have the power to take children into care unless parents voluntarily hand over care and sign a consent form.

If parents don't sign this then police protection is required temporarily and then the local authority would have to go through the courts to get a care order if the children couldn't stay with relatives under a special guardianship order.

Giving social workers powers of entry fundamentally changes the nature of their role.

It would weaken the relationships they have with families and is more likely to turn begrudgingly compliant parents into manipulative and deceitful parents.

It's already a sector that relies on temporary staff, and overseas workers, and has a high turn over.
