China - Impressions.

Was in and out of China every six weeks between 1990 - 2014. Was Technical Director of an imports company. During the early years and duringhigh production season June-August I used to stay for 3 months, based in HK. I learnt to speak a bit of Cantonese too. (Forgot most of it now). HK was brilliant before and just after the handover, work hard, play hard. As China became more open, a lot of production moved from South China to Shanghai/Hangzhou/Ningbo and Beijing & Qingdao. I went back to Hong Kong 5 years ago, but I hated it then, as I’m in a wheelchair now and it just wasn’t disabled friendly at all. However, I’d recommend HK & China as a place to visit; if just once. Fantastic memories.

46% of the world’s electric vehicles are driven in China. Was surprised when I heard this as according to a lot of people they are solely responsible for climate change and don’t give 2 fucks.

Averaged out per person, each US citizen emits twice as much CO2 as each Chinese (and almost ten times an Indian).

That's before you even get to the fact that so much of the shit they're producing is due to demand from other countries.

This sort of thing is why I’m sceptical of the way that China is portrayed to us by our media. Without wanting to sound like a conspiracy theorist!

I worked there , june 89, it was ok till they murdered 10,000 students, would never set foot in the place again.
I've been a couple of times as a tourist, I wouldn't go again. I found the people unfriendly and unhelpful (opposite to Japan and South Korea).
If you get a taxi have the right change as they have a habit of giving you fake notes in your change.
Didn't like the smog either !
I worked in HK before 97 and it was truly great. Not so now.

I don't like how the government treat their own or how they support N Korea & Russia.

Pretty sure they’re the world leader in renewable energy production too.

Yes, unfortunately the media can't really be relied on for anything much at all.

Surely that's because the vast majority of those 2 countries are very poor and don't own cars ?
Amongst many other things, meat consumption etc etc.

Which is kind of the point, if we get to the stage where the vast majority of those two countries live the same lifestyle that we do, then barring some technological solution, we'll be completely screwed.

How did you get that 46% figure ? I'd be really surprised if that were the case.

Not saying you're wrong just want to see actual data.

Someone else told me, so I did an internet search and found it here

As of June 2022, China had the largest stock of highway legal plug-in passenger cars with 10 million units, 46% of the global fleet in use.[12]China also dominates the plug-in light commercial vehicle and electric bus deployment, with its stock reaching over 500,000 buses in 2019, 98% of the global stock, and 247,500 electric light commercial vehicles, 65% of the global fleet.[1]
