To be fair, America is a disaster because of the infrastructure and planning, not because people are pricks. Canada too. I went to visit my sister in Canada and I was shocked by how little you can do without a car. A lot of American cities have some weird zoning laws meaning that houses have to be placed away from shops, forcing people to use cars. In most of the world, shops and houses are right next to each other. In America, there's often a minimum requirement for parking for new developments. In Europe, there's usually a maximum allowed. America also ripped out a lot of its public transport in the 50s and 60s to make way for car infrastructure. They used to be a world leader in things like trams. Now there's barely any city outside of New York with world class public transport. 46% of the world’s electric vehicles are driven in China. Was surprised when I heard this as according to a lot of people they are solely responsible for climate change and don’t give 2 fucks.

I would love to visitThese are my observations.
China does things that are for the good of and protect the whole population. I have no concerns when I'm out and about because;
1) There are no guns in general circulation.
2) The police (who are friendly and approachable, like a brother or sister would be) will be not far away keeping an eye on things.
As a result of these policies social order is maintained.
When I walk around there are no "got any change mister" people bothering you. No one sat next to cash machines or in front of shops covered with a blanket or sleeping bag with their grubby coffee cups trying to cadge money.
Nowhere will you get the aroma of 'exotic tobacco' as you walk through a busy area. (As smoked by some tiresome scrote 'because they can').
No aggressive drunks.
You just get normal people living life, getting on with things and enjoying their free time. The children can play in safety.
The situation on Manchesters' Market Street, Piccadilly Gardens (a misnomer if ever there was one), Portland Street and Oxford road with the beggars, druggies, drunks etc.is non existent.
The streets are much cleaner too.
Why do we tolerate the appalling behaviour in a fine city like Manchester? Why should we??
In many ways Chinese society is more tolerant than U.K. society.
In China I see people riding their small electric scooters or motorcycles with one or even two other people on board, Wearing a crash helmet is not mandatory.
Similarly, wearing a seatbelt in a car seems to be optional.
You can light up a cigarette in restaurants if you wish and no one bats an eye.
I was in a pool hall yesterday and a youth was smoking as he was playing pool, over the table ffs!
If anyone should visit, go with an open mind and you will have a wonderful time.

What is this 'compliance' you are talking about? Adhering to the customs and laws of the country in which you are a guest?

The country is hustle and bustle, relaxed and tolerant. They don't have a huge list of dos and donts. Daily life is ok.
Remember 1.4 billion people live in China. That is a lot of people to look after.
