Chinese OSCs, Shenzhen Blues + Sun Jihai + Shenzhen Peng City FC

Not in Beijing surely? Worst smog ever. Players couldn't train outside. The facilities for football nationally aren't remotely geared to world class player production yet and Beijing's stadia are old, even the Bird's Nest is rusting.

China MCFC suggests in another thread that the talk is of a takeover of this club:

It's not currently in the top league and has relocated to Beijing this year.

Guizhou Renhe, now, Beijing Renhe is where Sun Jihai is... and to get promotion would take major investment. The teams in China are ran more like a franchise and mergers between cross-city rivals are not unheard of. If City are pushing for it, they will find a sound pathway.

Thanks. Sun most be knocking on a bit now - I didn't know he was at that club. Yes, I'm sure City will work out a way to achieve what they want.

Sun played a day or so after receiving his award in Manchester at the Football Museum. He left Chongqing Lifan for Guizhou Renhe and from all accounts in local media is deeply tied in with his academy (which seems to be our academy). I'd post news but it does not translate so well.

Sun is a hero in China. Check out his Weibo star profile (like Facebook).

He has profiles everywhere and is regarded as China's first proper football star.

Think you've got it the wrong way round. Guizhao Renhe renamed themselves Beijing Renhe for the start of this season following another relocation (which they seem to be rather adept at - it's their third move in a decade. That said, it should also be their last as I understand that the chinese FA have recently instated a rule preventing new owners from relocating clubs to new cities.

"Well then, if you imagine this child in China, none of the considerations we have made so far are valid. Because this Chinese child has no history of football. Most probably he is the first member of his family to be interested in the game. His father and grandfather have never bothered with it and he does not know anything about it either.....but the choice of this little Chinese kid is very important for tge football industry. Clubs that aspire to become global face the challenge of recruiting this Chinese boy or girl as a fan, by explaining the differences between different football clubs and giving reasons for the child to choose theirs"

Ferran Soriano - 2009

These people are way, way ahead of the rest of us !!
Isn't that what we've been mocking United for for 20 years though?

(and obviously he's spot on)

I'd say that what we are doing in no way compares with what the rags have been doing. They've chosen to surf the wave of PL popularity to shift a few shirts without investing. We're placing ourselves in prime position at a point where the Chinese government are about to ensure the growth of the sport over there. Notice our link up comes just as these huge fees are being invested in name players. The rags can only watch it unfold before them.

Whether expansion into "new", evolving markets is really desirable is no longer the point. It's a fundamental part of our business plan to enable us to compete.
