Christian Bale - stealth comic thread

Well I probably will pass on that one but if he gets worn about by the spotlight then I'm sure he'll gravitate to doing more provocative stuff.

Batman was only ever the foil for the Joker. The Joker outshines Bats even in the comics/ graphic novels.

So, now you want them to re-write that whole 'different sides of the same coin' scenerio, after all these decades, so Bale can get his jollies on??

Yes please. Bale is stale and has no charisma.

He's great in the machinist and very good in harsh times.

Bale is great, Ledger is amazing and Eckhart is brilliant! Thrilling performances by all of them in the movie and its more of a crime-thriller movie than it seems a super hero movie. Without the whole Batman situation this movie would still be a masterpiece on its own! Anyhow on the topic at hand I doubt it is as serious as they are making it out to be ... it is the media think we know how they work.

Sorry Bigga but i can't let this one slip by. You can't have read many Batman comics or graphic novels if you think this to be true.

The Joker is a very charismatic villain and Batman's main nemesis, however the character itself is no where near as complex and interesting as Bruce Wayne's.

Just for starters Batman is supposed to be the worlds greatest detective, with amazing deductive skills, deeply traumatic childhood, an advanced knowledge of forensic science, amazing sense of justice and the peak of human ability.

Two Face, Scarecrow, Mr Freeze, Black Mask, The Riddler even Selina Kyle (Cat Woman) are all just as interesting as The Joker.

Ever since the shitty 90s Batman franchise and fat jacks Joker the emphasis was always on the villain in the Batman films because of Burton's first two Batman films. Burton refused to elaborate on the Batman character because in his own Goth Fairy way he believed the villains looked more interesting, this comes from a director who admits he'd be the last person to ever read a comic.

Dear, oh deary me!

Do you read comics/ graphical novels and not study the profile behind the characters? The 'Bats' you speak of, is the constantly sanitised version where he does things for 'the noble reason'. Prior to Tim Burton's light hearted homo-erotic gothic version, Bats was given a realistic profile (from which Burton's and Nolan's inspiration came from) and it's clear how close to the psychotic Joker, he actually is.

Joker's Profile:
e is extremely intelligent and has a firm grasp of chemical engineering and weapon design, which he uses to create various instruments of terror, death, and criminal hilarity, if only to the Joker. He is responsible for countless deaths and is a highly dangerous individual.
His mental state is completely unstable. He is highly insane and is a regular in Arkham Asylum. The Joker will at one time be mischievous and funny, but at other times be violent, brutal, and cruel. There seems to be no cure for the Joker’s insanity.

Bat's Profile:
Miller writes, "I felt that superhero comics had been held back by a misperception that they were just for kids. The comic book world had become so utterly pleasant and safe that the idea of somebody dressing up in tights and fighting crime seemed beside the point". He also had a much clearer vision of the psychology of Batman.

Batman only makes sense as a response to the world being a basically screwed-up place, where all the wrong people are in charge and justice is not served. . . . You see, Batman’s basic conflict in the story is to decide whether there’s a purpose for this kind of force in the world. In a sense, it’s a classic case of a hero whose function is to make himself obsolete. . . . He essentially harbors a death wish—much like a warrior who goes into battle one last time to find peace.

I'd say that they were pretty close. The only thing that keeps Bats together is the one last rivet Joker let go. Bats knows that Joker is free to excel in the release violence brings and is somewhat jealous he can do that. It's only the thought of shaming the memories of his parents that keeps him from doing so.

As a final point..
Another theme explores the possibility that Batman is just as insane as the criminals he faces ("You had a bad day once, am I right?" the Joker asks him, after which the Joker himself replies with "I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed."), but manifests insanity in a different way. In an interview, Alan Moore summarized the theme: "Psychologically Batman and the Joker [sic] are mirror images of each other."

Says critic Geoff Kluck:
Both Batman and the Joker are creations of a random and tragic "one bad day." Batman spends his life forging meaning from the random tragedy, whereas the Joker reflects the absurdity of "life, and all its random injustice."

Same coin, different sides.
