City and Black History

Did you ever see this BBC documentary on the Rugby League Code Breakers?

I know this isn’t to do with City but the North of England really embraced the black players coming into the game.

There’s also the Clive Sullivan Trophy played for in the Hull derby every year since 2001.

Clive Sullivan was the first black England captain in any sport, the first black England player in any sport to score in a World Cup Final and the first black England player in any sport to win a World Cup (which he lifted as captain).

Again, I know this isn’t a City thing but interesting on this topic, nonetheless.

If anyone has an hour, give that documentary a watch, it’s decent.

Yes mate. I thought the documentary was a great watch. Clive’s achievements have stood the test of time. He also may have created a wider legacy. The Black Pearl, Ellery Hanley, lives near me and we occasionally discuss RL and other sports.

Stan Horne, 1965, was City's first black player, for those who want to know.
Stan was from S.Africa originally where he was designated a ‘Cape Coloured’.
In apartheid days, the regime pretended there were no mixed race people but they came from an ethnic minority of Cape coloured people. Disrespectful and bonkers.

Anyone here booed during the taking of the knee v Everton? Someone somewhere behind me did. I genuinely want to know why.

I had a chat with Alex Williams tonight about this picture / mural. It’s on Wilbraham Road near Platt Lane. Alex said it had been up a year. The goalkeepers images are in keeping with the messaging about Maine Road to the Etihad.

Nice video. Racism is a blight on our society, not as bad as it used to be but still exists. The twats who boo the taking of the knee are no better than the Burnley twats with their banner, they miss the point that prejudice is a disgusting blight on society, and history

There are reasons why a demographic boos 'taking the knee'.

That is already explained in the first few pages.

Other reasonings I don't know about, but I suspect they are not the same thought process.

Both superb articles
The Bennetts lived on Montgomery Rd in Longsight directly opposite the playground of my primary school St Roberts
Neither of them drove so they usually got a lift from senior players like Paul Power or Donachie. Roger Palmer usually in the back en route to Sale
Used to be amazing at dinner time at school watching City players drop them off at the house, loads of us shouting through the fence for autographs
Power always obliged, a true gentleman. Steve MacKenzie also always came over and was very kind to us kids
Mrs Bennett was infamous as the fearsome ticket custodian of Levenshulme train station. She was a very difficult blag
