That's fairly poor for a country their size population wise. 564m bottles or around 2 glasses a year per head of population. Compare to 1.3 billion bottles a year in the UK with about 5% of the population.

Including the local wines 2.17 billion bottles of wine were consumed in China in 2013, Because Chinese mostly drink red wine, China is now the world's largest market for red wine. China's consumption of red wine has grown by 136% since 2008.

Being a nation of bigger pissheads than another nation is hardly anything to be proud of. If anything, it would be more respectable to reduce our overall alcohol consumption.

Having attended a few similar such events myself down the years, in my experience they are mainly exercises in ego massaging and intellectual dishonesty, where prizes are rarely dished out on merit.
