I noticed that one of the large old badges have been swapped for the new one above the entrance to the academy today but it has been left covered up. It is going to be a huge task swapping all the badges over everywhere.

No they're not. The left side of the ship as viewed is the bow and the wind is blowing in from the right side from behind the ship, so that's why they point to the left, in the direction of the wind. The sails billow to the left too.
