City End Eto Chase - Official

You have to wonder if Robinho is going to want to stay if we fail to sign any 'big' names....... I doubt he saw the big 'project' as being Roque Santa Cruz and Wayne Bridge......

Exactly, mate. That really worries me.

Sometimes it seems almost like there is parallel thinking going on.

Hughes is busy recreating Blackburn Rovers while ADUG are working on much bigger ideas.

Didn't seem like Eto'o was ever really all that keen on the deal anyway. You cant force the fookers to play here.

Once CL football is secured, they'll be lining up....a fook off pay packet, and CL footy? Where do I sign they'll say....

;P

I think that's harsh - Barry is better than anyone who's played for Rovers since Shearer. Hughes might be over-paying but he's getting Internationals who can gel, ADUG want the Marquee signigns but are they being realistic? Forget Madrid, look at how Arsenal did it when they had the best period in their recent history with a few proven players and some gambles on younger players (Henry was nowhere til Wenger got hold of him for not a lot)

Behind the scenes at City, something isn't quite right when it comes to bagging top players.

But I believe that in time, the club will get it right.

Using the rags as perhaps the clearest example ( and don't forget Hughes was schooled there), the person that makes deals happen and soothes the player's egos or whatever is Ferguson. Look at the Berbatov saga. Alex Ferguson drove to the airport himself and picked the player up. He did not leave it to 'suits'.

Mark Hughes said in January that some people at the club needed to learn how football deals are done. That lesson remains outstanding IMO. Forget the people around the player for a moment. If Eto had been personally convinced/committed to the move, he would have come to City. Ronaldo has just gone to Real for just that reason.

I think there is too much reliance on 'business' and 'strategy' to the detriment of the personal factor. It should not be left to the likes of Cooke to convince players like Eto to come to City. Hughes should be doing that - personally.

Interesting, but I'd rather say what is it in Hughes' character that you've seen that ever makes him 'hands on'?? Never seen it yet, so I can't see him changing.

As far as I know he delegates everything, pretty much.

And therein lies the problem, bigga.

Hughes certainly talks the talk, it's the other bit that's in doubt.

I think we've done the right thing in pulling out of the deal. Presumably it became clear that he wasn't going to sign, so we might as well be pre-emptive rather than let his people say he turned us down. Not that it really matters, of course.

Personally I'm not that despondent about it; he was never going to be the messiah many thought he would be.

To suggest that he's not come because Hughes isn't a big enough pull is ridiculous though; Manchester City aren't a big enough pull at the moment. Get used to it.

Thats true, but if we had Jose Mourinho at the helm are saying we would be strugglling as much to sign the big names ? I think not...

But that's completely hypothetical. We don't have Jose Mourinho, and we never had a chance to get him. It's like saying "yeah but if we had Messi would big names turn us down?".
