I think we've done the right thing in pulling out of the deal. Presumably it became clear that he wasn't going to sign, so we might as well be pre-emptive rather than let his people say he turned us down. Not that it really matters, of course.

Personally I'm not that despondent about it; he was never going to be the messiah many thought he would be.

To suggest that he's not come because Hughes isn't a big enough pull is ridiculous though; Manchester City aren't a big enough pull at the moment. Get used to it.

Thats true, but if we had Jose Mourinho at the helm are saying we would be strugglling as much to sign the big names ? I think not...

But that's completely hypothetical. We don't have Jose Mourinho, and we never had a chance to get him. It's like saying "yeah but if we had Messi would big names turn us down?".

Exactly, im asking a Hypothetical question to determine whether City would be a better prospect with a different manager..... your saying City arent a big enough pull and its not hughes fault, im saying if we had a bigger name manager then City would be a bigger draw, ergo, Hughes is not a big enough pull and it is not ridiculous to suggest so.

It's probably worth noting that Benzema reckons he's just turned Fergie down ... who in my book is a far better manager , and a much bigger name , than Mourinho ........ it happens to the very best of us ..... and they COULD offer Champions League football!

Having a globally recognised and successful manager doesnt guarantee signings, but it certainly helps

As someone else has alluded to, Ferguson (who, loathe as I am to admit it, is the biggest name manager in European football) has been unable to hang on to his best player, and unable to attract his main transfer targets (namely Benzema and Ribery). And he's managing one of the three biggest clubs in the world.

So would City's pull be different with another manager? No. It really wouldn't.

You have to wonder if Robinho is going to want to stay if we fail to sign any 'big' names....... I doubt he saw the big 'project' as being Roque Santa Cruz and Wayne Bridge......

Exactly, mate. That really worries me.

Sometimes it seems almost like there is parallel thinking going on.

Hughes is busy recreating Blackburn Rovers while ADUG are working on much bigger ideas.

Disagree a little bit. I think ADUG have fallen in step with Hughes and are happy with the Blackburn Rovers route albeit with a better level of players. Players like Tevez and Eto'o are not wanted by their current clubs which gives us a chance to land them but they are outside chances. It kind of makes sense given that Hughes is the manager so they might as well play to his ideals allied with a reasonably modest target of a top 6 finish. If last season was 'transistion' then this season is one of 'solid consolidation'.

On your earlier point about Hughes being more hands on well 1) thats just not him Hughes is not one for bold moves and 2) it isn't going to make a blind bit of difference with someone like Eto'o so why bother.

I have no problem with good players like Barry signing purely for money (like we wouldn't do the same) but I do hope for Barry's sake we land at least 1 other big name and on big money otherwise he will be looking a total c**t.

As I said, having a world class manager doesnt guarantee a transfer but it certainly helps, if you think otherwise then more fool you Richard !

At the end of the day, if you were offered the chance to do the same job you're currently doing for more money, you'd jump at it. Just because footballers have vastly inflated salaries doesn't make this concept less true or not apply to them.
