More on his recent interview.

Platini prepares the way to make financial fair play rules . . . more fair

NYON: UEFA president Michel Platini is ready to review financial fair play after continuing criticism that it prevents lower and middle order clubs from rising up the football ladder on and off the pitch writes KEIR RADNEDGE.

Speaking in a television interview with BeIn Sports, the head of the European federation said: “I have decide to sunmon a round table to disvuss wha is working and is not working.

“The club licensing committee headed by David Gill (ex-Manchester United ceo and a UEFA executive member) has been listening to what has been said and in May, will come up with proposals – or not – to the executive committee to refine the FFP regulations.”

In the same interview Platini suggested that a German player should win this year’s FIFA World Player award rather than usual favourites Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo, last year’s winner, is the bookmakers’ favourite after his record-breaking goalscoring exploits during Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph last season.

Messi, a four-time winner of the award, is also expected to figure prominently after inspiring Argentina to the World Cup final.

However, Platini said: “I don’t vote for the Ballon d’Or but, in principle, [in a World Cup year] it’s a player who has produced big performances in the tournament who wins it. So, it should be a German this year.

“It was like that until 2010, when Messi won in spite of having had an average World Cup, so nothing is certain for this year.

“However, what is certain is that Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world long with Lionel Messi. There’s no doubt about that.”

That's a big relief. David Gill's on the case.

Platini explained that FFP came as a result of complaints by Italian clubs, notably by Berlusconi and Morazzi, who were both losing 100 million euros a year and who complained that such losses were unsustainable.
Well the simple answer is you either don't make losses and trim your expenditure/grow revenue or you get out of the business.

It's like someone having a chain of mini-markets in a town and then Tesco opening a supermarket just out of town. The mini-market owner complains that trade has suffered, so the council restrict the amount of stock the Tesco can buy so it's no greater than the amount that the mini-market owner spends.

Re: City & FFP (continued)

would love the challenge to go all the way if only to see platini squirm under real cross-examination

if his performance with samuels or this latest interview are anything to go by he is guaranteed to put his foot in it

Didn't this actually happen when Costco came to the UK?

Iirc the big supermarkets got the amount of stock Costco could carry limited to two thousand lines, a fraction of what it carries in the USA

Yes, I was worried they'd hand the job to a big club stooge, make a couple superficial changes, announce them with much fanfare and tout them as evidence of their ongoing commitment to fairness, and then change it all back again after the DuPont court case is over, but now I can tell they're serious after all! A victory for justice, no question.
