City games you've missed for more important commitments?

I missed the derby in 1989 due to a wedding.

We were rubbish. We won 5-1. They’re still together so all good.

How my father-in-law didn’t pin me against a wall I’ll never know! I believe I was a bit of a nuisance ;).
I was at a wedding for the 5-1 too (as a 9 year old page boy). Both bride's and groom's families were massive blues (date arranged before fixtures came out), so many guests were nipping out to their cars during the service itself to check the score (bride and groom huge blues too, so weren't bothered!). No-one could believe it was 3-0 at HT. Reception took place in a very celebratory mood.

? They couldn't have been proper blues if they weren't nipping out themselves. Especially during the service. Especially at the moment the question was popped…

(Perhaps the classiest way of being jilted in all of nuptial history)

Missed the Gillingham game.
I was a car salesman for a 'ford franchise' and the manager was a rag!

He and 3 others from our dealership went to Barca to watch the CL final.
I asked for the Sunday to go to Wembley (straight after we'd beaten Wigan) and he said 'no'!

It's not the 'no' that wound me up, but the delight he took in refusing me the day off

He was a prick and every time we beat them, even now, I smile cos I know how much it'll be p***ing him off!!!!!

i missed my mates wedding for leeds v city fa cup game when we won 2-1

funny i never saw him after that

Champions League final for my best mates wedding. Red ****… did manage to sneak off to a pub to watch it during the speeches.

I was on the way to Manchester from East Yorkshire, can’t remember the game but it was the season when we got relegated to the third tier. As things turned out I had an expensive appointment with the AA, on the M62 and missed the game and seven hours of my life. Anyway City lost so no matter, but I fell out with the car and divorced it soon after.

My Sister booked her wedding on the date of the CL final in Cardiff in 2017. I told her I’d be going to the final if we got there, she told me she’d disown me if I did.

Only games I’ve missed have been through illness.

Villa at home when we won the league.
I was asked to be godfather for my best mate, even the rags couldn't believe I was at the Christening, and btw who the fuck has a christening at 2PM.

Charlton away in the 97. Married an Orpington lass in Bromley and tentatively suggested we could go and make an appearance at the Valley and then go onto the wedding reception straight after.

She gave me very short shrift on that and despite missing the game (2-2 draw I think) we are still married 28 years later

Our Wembley game against Sheffield United I had a replacement knee opp ten days before. I was crazy hoping to get there bare in mind am the driver but didn't stand a chance.
Still gutted it's my only missed Wembley trip since 1976 (excluding covid).CTID

Cup final 2011 I missed completely.
Off on honeymoon, and was actually on the plane going for the full duration of the match.
Arrived to a phone full of text messages from mates (mostly Liverpool fans) winding me up saying we'd lost, but saw the important one from my dad saying we'd done it.
Had to wait 2 weeks to actually watch the game back again, and see the trophy lift!

Fa Cup Final v Stoke 2011. I had my brother-in-laws wedding and a 13 day old son. Turns out having a tiny baby means you can be a great dad and offer to go back to the room to get him to sleep and subsequently stay there for 90 minutes with the TV on mute.

10-1 v Huddersfield. GF at the time insisted I went to her Nan's 80th birthday FFS. Still fuming.

Fa cup final v rags treble season, wife finally convinced me to go abroad, told her to book after season ends in may forgetting the season ended later due to the world cup in Saudi.. landed at Verona airport at 3pm,watched it in the que on a phone at the checkpoint to the bemusement of others when gundo scored after 13 seconds, going mental to the embarrassment of the wife and kids.
