Daily Mail at it again!

Manchester City look set to take their place with seven other teams in the restructured FA Women's Super League 1. Belles will play in Super League 2. Gill, Kaz, Nicky, Joanne, Tina, Channy, Monster Munch, six FA Cups, two League and Cup Doubles, five series of 'Playing the Field'. All gone.

Arsenal general manager Vic Akers, who founded the club's women's team in 1987, called it 'morally scandalous', adding: 'When we started, Donny were the premier women's team in the country. What's happening to them now is unjust. To relegate them after 90 minutes is a joke - it's kicking them out.

Uncertain future: The Belles have been told they will play in the second tier from next season

And the wait goes on...

The Belles have had their appeal hearing adjourned until the end of the month to give the club more time to prepare their case, the FA announced.

Club officials met with the FA's appeal board at Wembley Stadium.

Today an FA spokesman sent this statement: 'Following on from a preliminary hearing this week, the Independent Appeal Board adjourned the Doncaster Rovers Belles appeal hearing until Tuesday, June 25, to give the club more time to fully prepare their case.'
.
'If you're talking about relegation then you should also talk about promotion, and Manchester City didn't win the Premier League (the level below the WSL), they finished fourth.'

The FA casually dropped this bombshell on their website. Hey, this is women's football: nobody really cares. We can just do what we want.

No reasons have been given, other than the fact City fulfilled the organisation's criteria - based on finance, club structure, coaching set-up and playing standard - and the Belles did not.

Doncaster have been in decline since those glory days of the early 1990s, but make no mistake: this decision came down to cold, hard cash. City have it and the Belles do not. Never mind 44 years of history, we will simply buy our way into the top flight. The Belles, however, will not just go quietly. The club has appealed against the FA's decision and have been given until June 25 to 'fully prepare their case'.

Got a feeling that FA are..

A) Desperate for a Manchester team
B) Desperate for an impressive setup (stadium/coaches/fields etc)
C) Hates small clubs from small towns because it makes the league look insignificant
D) Are as bad in their job as we believe

This is the crux of why it isn't City's fault.

It's not Citys fault. It's the FA's. They're bloody useless at everything. Why not expand the league so all current teams can stay in or let the money work over time. I.E through relegation and promotion.

They ARE expanding the league, from one league of 8 teams to 2 leagues of 8 and 10 teams with promotion/ relegation.

Sunderland have won the Women's Premier League for the last few seasons and not been promoted to the Super League, Liverpool were bottom and remained in the top flight.

They should have had all clubs apply under the criteria test, to see who met or did not meet the criteria and then given those clubs that do not meet the criteria a certain length of time to meet it. I don't know if they did this but a straight yes/no is morally wrong. (Maybe they have had 2 years since the WSL was formed to do this, I don't know).

Manchester City ladies would never have been in a position to apply were it not for them getting backing from MCFC last year.

I'm kind of torn, competition should be fair and if any team is good enough to compete then they should be allowed to do so. I do get some of what the FA are trying to achieve though, they are trying to grow the game. The way they are going about it is shocking.

Yes it would be nice for Manchester Ladies to be in the WSL and competing, but they have only been affiliated to MCFC for a year and undoubtedly with access to coaching and facilities that they have not had before they will naturally become better and more competitive. It's not MCLFC's mess, who wouldn't take up the offer? it's the FA's.

Ah, just found this article dated 1/11/09. Looks like criteria were in place from the outset. Interesting regarding Sunderland ladies too.

As they move into the new league, City have ditched all their players from last season bar one!

Not sure that's correct, although there will be changes to the squad.
