City launch MLS Franchise

Apparently, a NYC football supporters group is not happy with the City/Yankees partnership and have decided to back the new Cosmos team instead. This sort of "we don't have a team yet" supporters group isn't a new concept, as Philadelphia had something similar before MLS awarded their city a franchise.

The funny thing though, is that the Cosmos are just as artificial a creation as NYCFC will be, but I can understand the feeling of being upset that you have been advocating having a team in their city, then to find out it might just be a glorified feeder team for an English club. The other big factor is that probably 50% of the group hates the Yankees, and probably 90% hate City, as they already support another English club.

Well then they'd be cosmos fans and not NYC fans, wouldn't they?

Meh whatever.

I live over here in New York City and one of the things that bothers me the most about their sport is the lack of promotion/relegation. For the country that supposedly gave the world capitalism and staunch proponents of the free market system, there is something decidedly socialist about their sports framework. Even their transfer system (the 'Draft') stinks of socialism where, quite bizarrely, the shitest performing teams from last season get rewarded with the best players!

Yeah I've always wondered about that too. United States being stereotypically capitalist and "you earn what you keep" while Europe (generalization I know) is thought of as more socialist and spread the wealth.

Honestly there are advantages and disadvantages to both systems.

American system is better because you don't have these duopolies like R Madrid v Barcelona or Rangers v Celtic but the disadvantage is that you have these terrible owners living off welfare like the Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

In regards to promotion/relegation I'd love for MLS to have that but it's not practical.

It's not like England where there were hundreds of teams at the start and they naturally formed a hiearchy. MLS is started from scratch with owners paying millions for a expansion team. If you had promotion there would be no incentive for owners to pay expansion fees + owners would be hesistant to invest if they knew their investment would go up in flames from a relegation.

Forget the Yankees, the Cubs are the real deal when it comes to Manchester City.

To paraphrase Francis Lee, If there were Cups for Cock -Ups the Chicago Cubs would win the lot.

This. I've been hoping for an Etihad deal for the Cubs myself. But Ricketts is involved with Derby County.

Hope NYCFC buy Thierry Henry and have a billboard in Times Square with his arms outstretched saying "Welcome to New York City"

sorry if it's been said earlier, but this deal has stopped Beckham launching his deal in MSL. No places left in league........rrrrrr what a shame !!!!!!!!!!

I don't believe that is correct. MLS doesn't seem wed to the idea that they're stopping at 20 teams.
